Pound for Pound: Back on the Streets

CENTER]You-know-who.[/center]

Kimbo Slice has more haters than most of us have friends, enemies and family combined. Much of the criticism comes from fans of mixed martial arts, especially those who have patiently waited for the sport to rise from its government-afflicted dark ages and finally attain the undisputed title of "mainstream sport". MMA's network television debut was a major milestone in that quest, but many had envisioned the unveiling of someone like a Georges St. Pierre or an Anderson Silva - an athlete, gentleman and "complete" mixed martial artist. Instead, it was the scary lovechild of Tank Abbott and Mr. T, a former streetfighter and porno studio bodyguard, who ushered in this new era. What some may not realize is that this event isn't quite as ironic as it seems when considering the rise of the Gracies, a family of street fighters who started a revolution when they issued an open challenge to the world almost fifteen years ago...

Helio Gracie

In 1917, legendary fighter Mitsuyo Maeda taught jiu jitsu to Carlos Gracie, an older brother of Helio Gracie. Helio would eventually learn the art and issue open challenges to fighters from all over Brazil to "vale tudo" matches, which loosely means, "anything goes".

Inspired by Gracies in Action , a video series featuring Gracie Jiu Jitsu fighters in various no-holds barred matches, the Ultimate Fighting Championship was unleashed upon the world in 1993. The UFC was essentially a continuation of the Gracies' open challenge to a street fight, and the street fight element of it was heavily marketed. The public reaction to the extreme violence of the UFC resulted in MMA being banned in 37 states by 1997.

Fast-forward about a decade later to the rise of Kevin Ferguson, AKA Kimbo Slice. In a series of videos released on the internet, this 240lb. bogeyman beats the hell out of various opponents in backyards and warehouses. Kimbo's ghetto prize fight vids garnered millions of views and make im something of a legend. Legendary fighter in his own right, Bas Rutten, would eventually befriend and train Kimbo to prepare him for his MMA career. After trouncing three meticulously hand-picked opponents, including Tank Abbott, Kimbo finally found himself tested as a mixed martial artist when he faced PRIDE veteran James Thompson.

Some claim that Kimbo was exposed on the eve of MMA's network debut when he was nearly choked out and suffered over a minute of punishment to his skull. However, Kimbo never gave up and ultimately landed the titanic, blood-gushing punches that everyone had come to expect. He did what he came to do, which was to fight.

The story of today is that MMA is a sophisticated sport driven by professional athletes/martial artists, and there will be plenty of chances for the public to read that particular chapter. But what we saw in Kimbo Slice's last fight summons the spirit of how the story began.

I see where your coming from, but this is why a lot of people will disagree....

My Gracie history is a little rusty so it might not be pure details but bear with me..

Helio Gracie and Carlos Gracie developed Brazilian Jiu Jitsu when Mitsuyo Maeda taught Carlos Gracie the art of Jiu Jitsu and Carlos taught this to Helio they turned basic Japanese Jiu Jitsu into a Martial Art that a smaller man can defeat a bigger opponent with pure technique.

So Helio challenged most Brazilian fighters who 99.9% were stand up fighters / strikers into Vale Tudo matches to prove that the martial art Helio and his older Brother Carlos developed is one of the best martial arts in the world. A lot of people laughed at the smaller Helio but he proved his point in these Vale Tudo matches and the history continues until he met Kimura Masahiko and got submitted, broke his arm and now that's why that certain move is named Kimura because the Gracie's never seen that move before, etc etc.

Kimbo had no specific stylea and he wasn't the first to do what he did. Only the first guy to do on YouTube. He didn't do everything goes match up to prove his style could defeat anyone. He just pretty much did Bare Knuckle boxing in backyards. Big difference. Helio Gracie was the first man to challenged others with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Kimbo Slice was not the first man to challenge others to bare knuckle boxing because this has been done back in the days with other fighters.

Now the fighting spirit in both men is the same thing maybe a little cloudy in Kimbo's part because Kimbo does it a little bit more for the money and Helio Gracie did it more to prove his families art and his families honor in creating Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

A lot of guys bash street fighters, or Vale Tudo fighters, but this is where MMA was born. I love Vale Tudo because it's MMA in it's purest form. Man VS Man with the whole body as an arsenal. Every weapon you can use that your body is capable of. Pure Hand to Hand Combat. A lot of people bash it but it's like bashing Muay Boran the ancient way of Muay Thai. Without one the other couldn't have been brought up.

Helio Gracie and Kimbo Slice were both " street fighters " since they fought in the street. Both what Helio Gracie stands for and did, compared to what Kimbo Slice did really has nothing in common. Just my 2 cents.

You started this article with the term "hater." How exactly am I supposed to take this seriously again?

You started your post with "so fuck off thx", which doesn't fill me with confidence that the article will be anything more than the ramblings of an angry teenager.

Its a shame Ryan passed away. Ryan Gracie would have beaten down Kimbo and it would have been a great event.

wow, how can you even compare kimbo to some of the greatest fighters the world have ever seen? Kimbo is just a joke compared to most pro MMA fighters IMO
