How Bruce Lee Changed The World

Setting the DVR as we speak...

http://www.nypost.com/seven/05152009...ree_169305.htm

"... On Sunday night, History Channel will present a fantastically detailed special on what, at first, sounds insane, but is nonetheless true: "How Bruce Lee Changed the World." It's something untold millions of Bruce Lee fans have known for four decades.

So how did a martial arts guy, who died at age 32, change the world?

Lee, you'll learn, changed not only cinema -- remember, he produced the first martial arts movies without special effects and turned himself into the first ever Asian superstar -- but music, arts, fitness, martial arts, body building and, oh yes, philosophy.

Lee also invented mixed martial arts -- which is now a multi-multi million dollar industry. (The last pay-per-view Mixed Martial Arts Championship earned $50 million!) ..."

I dont agree with this at all. Yes, he was an open minded actor *whoops* I mean martial artist. But to say he INVENTED mixed martial arts is just not true. Technically mma started as valetudo in Brazil, or maybe thousands of years ago with Pankration.

Modern day mma was mostly started by the Gracies.

Just listen to what bruce had to say about the martial arts, you know he gave the first and most truest blueprint on how about to get the best out of yourself when it came to the martial arts. You do it the bruce lee way and you will not go wrong as far as martial arts is concerned.
Yes he was the first true MMA fighter. Just because people have in the past mixed more than 2 styles dont make you doing what bruce lee was doing and preaching.
Basically learning to box and doing Judo dont make you bruce lee or the first MMA guy.
But bruce lee did change the world. The impact he created. He shook up the world on a level Ali could only dream about.

He pretty much is the father of mixed martial arts. Go and watch his interview with Pierre Berton http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uXOtmhA6Nvw

The whole time he spent studying other martial arts to try and seek out what was best at a time when people always though their martial art was the best and weren't keen on teaching people who practiced another martial art. Lee was knocked back by various imasters and had to learn sometimes from 2 or 3 down the chain.
If you watch Enter the Dragon you can see him doing an armbar as well.
If you've read his stuff he is very scientific about why he chooses the motions that he does and in the end he says what works best for you is not going to be what works best for someone else.
Go and get his Tao of Jeet Kune Do and look at his diagrams and notes. It's amazing stuff.
The art of expressing the human body is an awesome concept as well. Read up on it.

Most of all he took pride in being a human being which is what I find the best part about him. He did not wish to categorise himself. At a time when there was lots of racism he was able to be colour blind. He accepted everybody as being part of one big family.

Anyway, don't be quick to judge any subject matter before you really know the facts.

Peace

Yes, I am well aware of all you said there, but I still dont think it is appropriate to say that he invented mma. Maybe he was one of the early martial artists with a mma-mindset, but if there is any person who could be named the "inventor of mma" (which I dont think there is) it is Helio Gracie. What he and his family did had a MUCH bigger impact on modern mma than Bruce Lee.

I caught the middle an tail end of this earlier tonight; rare to catch me in front of the tube anymore.

There is a case to be made Bruce isnt the father of MMA; however Im willing to extend my hand to him in that respect because of how much influence he had on everybody else. He may not have been the first to have the idea, but he definitely did his part in sharing that idea with the masses.
