Modern day mma was mostly started by the Gracies.

He pretty much is the father of mixed martial arts. Go and watch his interview with Pierre Berton

The whole time he spent studying other martial arts to try and seek out what was best at a time when people always though
their martial art was the best and weren't keen on teaching people who practiced another martial art. Lee was knocked back by various imasters and had to learn sometimes from 2 or 3 down the chain.
If you watch Enter the Dragon you can see him doing an armbar as well.
If you've read his stuff he is very scientific about why he chooses the motions that he does and in the end he says what works best for you is not going to be what works best for someone else.
Go and get his Tao of Jeet Kune Do and look at his diagrams and notes. It's amazing stuff.
The art of expressing the human body is an awesome concept as well. Read up on it.
Most of all he took pride in being a human being which is what I find the best part about him. He did not wish to categorise himself. At a time when there was lots of racism he was able to be colour blind. He accepted everybody as being part of one big family.
Anyway, don't be quick to judge
any subject matter before you really know the facts.
