Why Didin't Monson Dig To The Body Against Tim Sylvia?

Jeff Monson could have pounded Big Tim's guts everytime he got him down... In Tim's closed guard, Monson tried to headhunt Tim but his punches never went beyond Tim's chest.

He wasn't having any success on the ground and if you watch when Monson is on top, and in Tim's guard, the Mainiac's body is uncovered and wide open...

What was he thinking?

He should've used elbows to the body while in guard a la Rampage against Wanderlei. Now that is how you work the body.

He probably just wanted a few superficial point scoring nothing punches before passing the guard and going for the sub.

Theres no way gnp from the guard was ever a legitimate part of his gameplan.

Yeah i agree.
And why he tried to shot to the leg all the time? Isnt more effective to shot at the hips? Just asking

Horrible gameplanning by Monson and his camp. Absolutely terrible. He had no plan for what to do if he did get Tim down.
Tim is no JJ wizard but of course MFS would have him ready to hold on for dear life with his guard. And there are plenty of examples of a much shorter fighter being prone to headshots by the guy in guard while being unable to answer.
Elbows to the body/how to ground and pound a big guy like Tim should have been something he prepared for in case he had trouble passing the guard.

He also missed a golded opportunity to do damage from side control. Instead of throwing knees (I think he did one) and elbows to the completely exposed ribs, or doing knee on belly or something he just looked for the sub. One separated rib is all it would have taken to completely turn the fight around.
