Great thread, Ive always known he had a karate background but I wasnt sure exactly how that played a part in his striking.

I appreciate his MA background and how he uses it in the ring. He really is impressive, especially how he seems to avoid any damage. His success with Karate/Judo styling goes to show how much this is an individual sport. Machida has physical skills combined with a lifetime of training (look up his bio and his father) that give him a unique style that works for him.

It's like we're seeing a new generation of Bruce Lee's developing their own martial arts based on their individual background and personal strengths. Machida's style would be useless without great reflexes and a LOT of years of training in his styles. GSP has developed a unique style based on his strengths and background. I think this is a great time to be a fan of MMA as all these changes are happening.
