Other positive points for RYU is 1) his insane reflexes, the punch where he put SOKO down was blindingly fast and caught SOKO head down while he was trying a cut kick.

2) He's got pin point accuracy. He always seems to hit his opponents right on the button.

That is not a boxing parry. The gloves and the open handed nature of the parry make it very different from what you see in boxing.

I think Tito is Machido's only serious threat.

I don't think so, he is too slow and most of his takedowns are coming from the clinch, where Machida is very good as well + Machida's standup is far better.

I have edited the OP to reflect a few changes that I thought were appropriate and address some points that posters have been bringing up.

Nice thread, props to the TS.

Machida is a force, the UFC needs to get behind him now. The fight with Tito is tough, but it's a great fight for Machida in terms of exposure.

I don't like bigging fighters up to early, but by the end of 2008 I fully expect this guy to be a top 5 LHW.

Damn straight it is. People always talk about how TMA blocking/trapping doesn't work and your hand work has to be sport based (MT, boxing, kickboxing, etc.). What people fail to realize is that those fighting styles are based on the equipment they use.

That's why we see guys cover up like boxers only to have their opponent's fist go right through their guard. Happens all the time (happened to Wandy against Chuck).

With small MMA gloves, there's a whole world of techniques available that almost no one is using.

Exactly. Saw an example of the cover up get through in Liddell vs. Ortiz I as well.....no amount of boxer's covering up saved Tito then.

I think that we are going to see more and more TMA techniques being brought into MMA as time passes.

Me too. TMA's deserve some of the guff they got with the MMA revolution but people wanted to throw the baby out with the bath water.
I've argued this a million times on these boards...

MMA is open to the same close mindednes that caused the de-evolution of so many TMA's.

"You don't need to learn any of that, all you need is what we teach."

Kind of ironic.
