McCoy chimes in – A good thread……..
It’s a good article and some good thoughts there.
It’s nothing new, of course, the child of the old Boxing Vs. Wrestling, Judo Vs. Karate stuff from decades ago.
With Boxing vs. MMA of course, there’s the new aspect: The jack of all trades Vs. the master of one, because MMA obviously rolls Boxing into it.
Not brought up yet unquestionably the deciding factor: The overall “natural Fighter” quotient, which will decide just how effective a man can become given all the training in the world.
Due to the comparative economics involved, it’s one of the few areas where Boxing would certainly have the edge.
Hard thing to measure, admittedly, given it’s a distinction of potential rather than result, but the size of the talent pool answering the call, per sport, is what offers the insight.

That’s a defensible statement in looking at the curve.
However, it speaks in absolutes, which is the gateway to miscalculation.
Certainly a good striker with only cursory grapping in the form of a sprawl can take out a good OR great MMA fighter, and it happens.
Further, the blanket statement begs the question: who in their right mind would fail to cross-train ?
Nobody in the upper 1/3 of MMA today, that’s for sure.
There are two ways to answer the Boxing Vs. MMA question:
One is- Which sport is better ?
That one goes to which one YOU like best. It’s an audience participation question.
Two is- Which fighter is better ?
That depends on which rules you would honor the fighters most in. The cleaned-up rules that accentuate athleticism and grace without the grab & tumble, or the ones that are more inclusive, realistic and provide multiple levels of skill and ability ?
And there again, that gets right back to which sport you like better, because neither Boxing nor MMA are street assaults, though Boxing and MMA would fundamentally prepare you well for one, if you train in them.
Regarding the whole aspect of “Best Human Weapon” between the two, take note of the fact that even early man knew enough to carry a club.
If Ali and Forman and Fedor and Nog and Randy wanted to walk up together to carjack me, I have enough rounds in my clip to take em’ all out without wrinkling my shirt, and I would.
So the whole street thing is really a very limited accolade in the real world.
As for me, I like prizefighting, and any rules will do.
