Is it better to train a striker to grapple or a grappler to strike?

Is it better to start with something like a champion kickboxer, and train him in grappling, or take an Olympic wrestler or Jiu Jitsu champion and train him to punch and kick?

I would say to train a grappler to strike, a decent grappler who can strike reasonably can do much better then a good kick boxer who can grapple reasonably. Grappling is much more technical and takes years to master just the basics.

Disagree totally. Grappling is much more instinctive than striking. Even with two good strikers than can be a genuine world of difference.........take Rich vs The Crow. Learn good takedown defence and work on improving your standupp. Chuck is a prime example of this.

This is actually a good topic, and only two posts.... sheeesh.

Consider posting in stand up and grappling forums with this one.

I don't really know for sure. I tend to believe that strikers that learn to grapple are a little more polished and smooth but this is debatable.

I would think it would be better to train a striker to grapple only because he would have better fighter mentality. I train Jui Jitsu and suck at boxing. I hold my own in a steet fight and can hang with the best of them but when I train hands with a real boxer I get torn apart, So i shoot in and bring em to my world. but Yeah I wish I had Boxed first and then got good at grappling, I think its the only reason I dont do MMA.

grappler to strike without question, b/c everyone already has some knowledge to throw a punch while their aren't too many strikers who can grapple. grappler's often become excellent strikers in mma b/c they don't have to fear the takedown. btw my post is referring to the "better" in your title even though when i wrote this I was really talking about which is easier to train. I totally prefer a sprawl and brawl for some reason. not that i have anything against grappling.

Look at CroCop, he does very well on the ground.........not worried he is going to sub someone but he did very well against Fedor on the ground. He lost yes........but he fought well and lasted the whole fight................very few people can claim they have done that. Nog took a far worse beating against fedor.
