But certainly you know that GSP has trained extensively with the Canadian national wrestling team. Their coach even said he could likely qualify for the Olympics. He has some of the best functional wrestling for MMA in the WW division right now. I'd say he's even surpassed Matt Hughes as far as wrestling for MMA.
Yeah GSP uses some karate techniques, but he relies far more heavily on what would be considered traditional MMA disciplines (MT, BJJ, wrestling, boxing). His standup is probably the one aspect of game that is weaker than the rest and that's the part that's most heavily influened by karate. I'm not necessarily saying there's a connection, but it's true.

Agreed, I pick Muay Thai, especially in the clinch a pure Kyokushin guy would not know what to do in the clinch. If someone says Kyokushin, they've been playing too much Street Fighter.

Agreed, but with that said I took Shotokan but my teacher added alot of other basick kick boxing techniques in with it. Alot of striking martial arts do have alot of basic Thai techniques added in with everything eles now. They don't call Thai the ultimate striking martial art for nothing.

classic karate block.

sand the floor i believe... maybe wax on wax off but really it is karate
Not Karate it is a simple boxing move, parry the jab.....nothing to do with karate...just the sweet science and a sloppy opponent for him to be able to parry that far out and the opponent not see it....
But, I would say the chin high in the air IS PURE KARATE!

It mostly depends on the school and the type of training you do with it. A Mcdojo is very rarely going to produce anything of worth, but a school that focuses on a harder style of training would do fine. It's all about what you do with the technique.
