Anyone who think Kyokushin sucks, should watch those two legends. Check out Glaube Feitosa also, who has one of the best chambered kicks I have even seen used.

And there are knees in Kyokushin to the head or body or legs. Elbows & punches below the neck only. Apparently they experienced too many injuries & cuts by allowing barefists to the head.

MT is the most straight-forward, simple & effective striking traditional style out there. Beyond that, you are just doing K-1 type kickboxing, which steps outside of the limitations & biases of MT (like lack of proper boxing) and incorporates other techniques from karate, kung-fu, kenpo and boxing, based on the fighter's preference and abilities.

You can't compare the two, IMO, because of the different tournament rules. Also, Kyokushin takes longer to master and is more complicated. At higher level of kickboxing competition, I would lean toward Kyokushin because of the advanced techniques. But if you take 2 newbies and send one to Kyokushin, the other to MT for a year, then have them fight, I would pick the MT guy to win each time.

The thing is, Kyokushin is so different from Shotokan that it's not funny. Kyokushin produced guys like Franciso Fihlo and Andy Hug, while Machida is the only Shotokan guy of note (and he heavily crosstrained)
kata wise
they both do basaidai
they both do teki shodon
they do simular katas but one is set up for more of a brawling stile and one uses a hell of a lot more foot work elbows knees flying kicks

I think when you watch the fighters...trying to pcik a dominant style is POINTLESS and getting really worn out on Sherdog...yet i still find myself scrolling through to see if there is a new argument.
Anytime i've ever seen to PRO fighters fight they always use a multiple of attacks. So if you have for instance a KK fighter against a MT guy...you will see them both "stealing strikes" from each other for a lack of better words...CROSS training!!
For the record i was hoping someone was going to post some links! haha

Whats that off-shoot of Kyokushin where they wear the headguards and it's punches to the head and throws.

GSP doesnt use karate, he uses wrestling

MAchida does use it and is getting decision wins because of his natrually fast reflexes so hes pretty elusive.. he doesnt knock people out

Semmy isnt technically all he is cracked up to be. IF he was a normal sized HW.. like 6'2 or something, he would be FUCK ALL

no respect.

I train in Japan and sometimes even with a new sparring partner it's hard to spearate the KK guys from the MT guys (I do MMA). The first clue is usually a foot in your face you never seen coming which is when i've usually determined its a KK guy. Those kicks come in at a weird str8 angle that's unlike MT and they dont really raise up on their feet as much as a MT guy so you dont get as much clue about it....ok i'm not expert jusat my .02 for the record!

Funny story about that kick. I compete nationally in AAU karate. We are sort of a mix of all the non full contact styles set up in a sprt format. Sounds worse than it is though. That kick that the KK guys use was actually what gave me a concussion in the finals. Probably not as funny to you guys but it is a different look. The only thing that saved me was that I tucked my chin down behind my shoulder as he hit me so I absorbed the kick better. Beautiful stuff. Id rather lose to an awesome move than win via something crappy.

For real!! That dude's Kyokushin is tight... And his "brazilian" kick is one of the coolest strikes I have ever seen in my life period. He has it done perfect and managed to rock Semmy with it last time they fought.. Awesome.

I think Muay Thai is as much about conditioning as it is about technique where Kyokushin like most forms of Karate tends to focus more on technique. Muay Thai makes you hard as nails.

Both are clearly effective though.
