Stop with this style vs style bullshit.

Muay Thai in "general" is better then Karate because of it's methods. But I've met Kyokushin and Shidokan Karate fighters who wipe the floor with Muay Thai fighters. I've met Kung Fu guys who've beaten Muay Thai fighters too. And vise versa.

Grow up.

Machidas strikes arnt shotokan strikes, its more his footwork and approach to fighting that smells of karate.

Actually a lot of his strikes are Karate strikes. His roundkick is Karate, and he chambers his punches a lot.

For what it's worth, my roomate in college was a Shotokan BB and I went to his dojo to train with them a couple of times. At least at his place they certianly did ground work, as well as all the traditional stuff like katas, drills, etc.

Now that said, it wasnt nearly as extensive at a BJJ class, obvoiusly, but they did roll a couple of times a month just to get the basics down. All in all it was more up-to-date for a TMA than I had seen before.

To those who say he does not actively practice Shotokan... you're an idiot.

Yes, he does crosstrain in BJJ, Wrestling, and MT. But he practices Shotokan everyday, and displays Shotokan techniques in his fights as well.

The thing is, Kyokushin is so different from Shotokan that it's not funny. Kyokushin produced guys like Franciso Fihlo and Andy Hug, while Machida is the only Shotokan guy of note (and he heavily crosstrained)
Ill agree with this guy and also Kyokushin uses knees. they dont punch to the face but that is the only technique they dont allow to the face. Well aside from the fact they dont use elbows. Shotokan isnt set up for a full contact match. The way we train and fight in matches doesnt translate as well unless you are really good at it. Although I will say that a shotokan fighter who specializes in ippon sparing( a specifac ruleset) would do better than it is commonly thought. Another difference is that for some reason most senseis in shotokan and its cousin arts are very disinclined to allow their students to do full contact stuff. Not really sure why though

We actualy work a few days off and on every couple months and actually judo style throws are legal in our style if you can do them without getting hit.My sensei is a strong proponent of grappling though we like to use our grappling to set up strikes. Sort of a rudimentary gnp
