KICK/WAKO National Tournament

Does anyone know much about this event www.kickwakonationals.com? They are having a bit of everything kickboxing, MMA, karate. It looks kind of interesting. Anybody going or fighting there?

Interesting. I'd never heard of this before, but now that you've brought it to my attention I might enter. I wonder what sort of numbers they bring in as far as fighters go?

Some ex-WAKO champs now fight in the WCL, but that's all I know about it.

Looks to me like the karate part is Open stuff so I dont think Id even be anywhere near invited and would likely get disqualified for something if I went. The Kickboxing and mma stuff should be cool and the open style karate guys always have some nice kicks but they have a major tendency to do this touch sparring. I dont do full contact either but we like to hit in our org.

This event is supposed to be HUGE!!! It will be an all amateur tournament event sanctioned by KICK International, the National Governing Body of all approved Martial Arts in the United States by the WAKO.

August 1st, 2nd, and 3rd - Hyatt Regency O’Hare, Rosemont, IL

Divisions include:
  • MMA
  • Full Contact Kickboxing (above the waist)
  • Low Kick Kickboxing (kicks above the waist and to thigh)
  • K-1 Rules Kickboxing
  • Point Fighting
  • Karate Forms and Musical Forms
  • Aero-Kickboxing (Choreographed aerobics/tae-bo, I guess it's big in Europe)

Last years tournament winners earned a spot on the U.S. Kickboxing team which traveled to Coimbra, Portugal to compete in the WAKO World Championships. The 2007 World Championships included over 600 competitors from over 70 countries. MMA was not an event last year, but it may be added in 2009 when the next WAKO World Championships takes place in France.

For more information visit www.KickWakoNationals.com

or www.GoKickbox.com for information on Team USA Kickboxing

The evening show Saturday night is scheduled to include several MMA superfights along with a number of Team USA Kickboxers taking on the Poland National Kickboxing Team.
