Self-defense works in many cases but no one is really safe from random violence. It doesn't even matter if you have a gun. The criminal is the instigator - he
always has the initiative. That mafia hitman Kuklinski (aka the Iceman) was no athlete; he was overweight and probably couldn't run 100m without gassing, he wasn't a skilled fighter or even particularly clever ..but he always got the job done simply because the victim just did not see him coming.
What are you going to do if a guy pulls up in his car asking you for directions and then brings up a crossbow to your face? (Kuklinski actually did this to a random guy just to see 'if that thing (the cross-bow) would work'). Forget the fantasy of the armed citizen - society's only defense is to catch these guys fast and put them away.
