~PART 1: K-1 CORPORATION~
==================

Q: What is K-1?

K-1 is a hybrid stand-up fighting sport that originated in Japan, in 1993. It was the first event to use a set of rules which allowed all stand-up striking arts to compete within one ring. Since that time K-1 has grown to be the most popular real combat sport in Japan.

K-1's History

Q: What does K-1 stand for?

The "K" refers to Karate, Kung Fu, Kickboxing, and any other martial arts beginning with the letter "K", although K-1 is not limited only to these obviously. The "1" symbolizes the gathering of all these fighting styles into one ring.

Q: Who is Ishii?

Kazuyoshi Ishii is the founder of K-1. He began his career as a Seidokan Karate master and moved on to become a high ranking martial arts mentor and promoter. These days he functions as the matchmaker of K-1 as well. Recently however Ishii has gotten in trouble for tax evasion and has resigned as president of the corporation.

Q: What are the weightclasses in K-1?

K-1 has all the usual weight classes, but the most publicized and popular weight division is heavyweight - specifically 86 kg and up. There is also a league called K-1 MAX, which is for smaller fighters up to 72 kg. There was a tournament held in 1993 called K-2, which was a light-heavyweight event. There is a new weight class for fighters under 100kg.

Q: What are the exact rules?

Essentially the fights consist of either 3, each 3 minutes long. Most strikes are allowed but elbows and headbutts are disallowed. A full explanation of the official rules can be found at the K-1 America page.

Full K-1 Rules

Q: Are knees allowed?

Yes, knees are allowed in K-1. In some regional events they are prohibited in order to conform with the local kickboxing federations' guidelines or for legal reasons, as was the case in Paris.

Q: How is K-1 different from "normal" kickboxing?

Essentially the rules are a bit different. For more information on kickboxing rules, follow the link below.

IKBF Rules

Q: Which martial arts style is the best for K-1?

The most successful styles have historically been Muay Thai and Kyokushin Karate, and some pure Boxing training is desirable as well. However this question could be argued about endlessly.

Q: How does the regional qualifying system work?

K-1 holds tournaments all over the world on an annual basis in preparation for the culmination of each year's results, the Grand Prix Tournament Finals held every December at the Tokyo Dome. The Regional Qualifiers are single-elimination tournaments and the winners of these move on throughout the year, progressing through all the big shows until they are either eliminated or they earn a spot at the GP Finals.

A Detailed Description of the World GP

Q: How much money does the Grand Prix Champion receive?

$400,000 US.

Q: Who is the K-1 World GP Champion?

The current Champion is Semmy Schilt, the winner of the 2005 K-1 World Grand Prix.

Q: Who won each K-1 World GP?

See Part 3 below for complete K-1 World GP results with winners of the annual tournament.

Q: Who has won the most K-1 World GPs?

Ernesto Hoost with 4 (1997, 1999, 2000 & 2002 K-1 World GPs).

Q: Who has won the K-1 MAX World Grand Prix?

Albert Kraus did in 2002, Masato in 2003, Buakaw Por.Pramuk in 2004 & Andy Souwer in 2005.

Q: Who is the best K-1 fighter of all time?

That's obviously debatable but many people would say the top three are Hoost, Aerts, and Hug so far.

Q: What is K-1 MAX?

K-1 MAX is a specific division of K-1 with a weight limit of around 74 kg (155 lbs.) The league follows a similar format to the regular K-1 World GP, holding shows year round and then finishing off the year with a tournament for the title. The action is faster, more technical, and often more exciting than the heavyweight division of K-1. The current champion is Albert Kraus from Holland.

Q: What is K-2?

K-2 was a tournament held by the K-1 organization only once, in 1993. The tournament featured light-heavyweights and included such fighters as Kaman, Changpuek, Petridis, Hoost, and Gibson. Hoost won the tournament.

Q: What is K-3?

Once again we have a mysterious and confusingly named K-1 tournament on our hands. This one was held in 1995 in Holland, for fighters up to 74 kg. It included Reding, Hippolyte, Ubeda, Anchez, De Jager, Theysse, Masseurs, Dumcic, Dolman and Toubert. Hippolyte won the event.

Q: Are K-1 fighters the best standup fighters in the world?

It depends how you look at it. The fastest and most technical fighters are the Lumpinee and Rajdamnern stadium champions. Some of the top K-1 fighters can indeed be called cream of the crop heavyweight kickboxers though.

Q: How big is K-1 in Japan?

BIG. Most large K-1 events are sold out and the GP is held every year at the Tokyo Dome selling out consistently. The TV Ratings of the 2002 GP were the highest share during its time, surpassing even baseball and other non-combat sports. K-1 is more popular than PRIDE in Japan as well.

Q: Is K-1 shown on PPV?

K-1 is available on PPV, but usually a month or so after the event has occurred. K-1 is often broadcasted on Eurosport and sometimes on ESPN2 as well.

Q: Where can I find K-1 tapes and DVDs?

If you're in North America you probably have to order tapes. Sherdog has some, as well as the Official K-1 homepage. There are no K-1 DVDs available outside of Japan. Older K-1 tapes can mostly only be found as bootlegs outside of Japan.

Official K-1 Merchandise

Q: What are the best tapes to get?

Well that's subjective but generally the GP Finals from 96-99 are good, with 99 being the best.

~PART 2: K-1 FIGHTERS~
==================

Cyril Abidi
Country: France
Club: "Team Romeas" Boxing Planet/Kickboxing
Date of Birth: February 15, 1976
Height: 190 cm
Weight: 98 kg
Comments: Wild brawler with little or no defense. His biggest win was Aerts by KO. This year he got to the finals of the Paris tournament, and recently lost a superfight against Hoost after an accidental groin to Hoost's knee caused a premature decision to be made. Competed under MMA rules at the first Inoki Bom Ba Ye.

Peter Aerts "The Dutch Lumberjack"
93, 94, 98 Grand Prix Champion
Country: Holland
Club: Meijiro Gym/Kickboxing
Date of Birth: October 25, 1970
Height: 192 cm
Weight: 106 kg
Comments: The legendary three-time GP Champion. Aerts was deadly when he was younger, always looking for the KO with deadly hands and feet. He is getting older but still showed strength in the 2002 GP.

Mike Bernardo
Country: South Africa
Club: Steve's Gym/Boxing
Date of Birth: July 28, 1969
Height: 193 cm
Weight: 108 kg
Comments: Bernardo is a power punching monster, who was feared when he first showed up in K-1 in 1995. His skills seem to have decreased with age as he had some tough losses throughout 2001-2002. After a bad performance in his last superfight against Filho, he probably will not be invited to this year's GP Eliminations.

Comments: A young mixture of Aerts and Hoost. This guy is good and has only lost against the cream of the crop so far in K-1. Won the 2003 Las Vegas GP with two KO's, and a decision win over McDonald in the thrilling final match.

Fransisco Filho
Country: Brazil
Club: Kyokushin Kaikan/Karate
Date of Birth: January 10, 1971
Height: 186 cm
Weight: 104 kg
Comments: Filho has completed two 100-man Kumites. He exploded into K-1 in 1997 but has been too defensive lately. In his recent superfight against Bernardo he was extremely passive and unimpressive but he has agreed to fight Mirko Filipovic, if Mirko signs, at the Osaka Eliminations this year.

Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic
Country: Croatia
Club: Cro Cop Squad/Boxing
Date of Birth: September 10, 1974
Height: 188 cm
Weight: 97 kg
Comments: Mirko is one of the top K-1 fighters right now because of his deadly speed and power, a great all-arounder. Recently defeated Bob Sapp by KO in K-1. He has stated that his dream is to become a champion in PRIDE and K-1. He's never been KO'd by punches to the head.

Date of Birth: January 17, 1966
Height: 191 cm
Weight: 112 kg
Comments: Big slugger, former champion armwrestler who began his fighting career in UFC. Exploded into K-1 in 2002 with a controversial win over Bernardo. He now trains kickboxing with Maurice Smith, and was impressive even in his defeat at the hands of Mark Hunt by decision earlier this year.

Sam Greco

Club: Team Greco/Karate
Date of Birth: May 3, 1967
Height: 188 cm

Martin Holm "The Sniper"
Country: Sweden
Club: Vallentuna Boxing Camp/Muay Thai
Date of Birth: October 27, 1976
Height: 187
Weight: 98
Comments: Holm is new to the K-1 scene but has so far done very well. He lost a very close decision to Sefo at the 2002 GP Semi Finals. Very exciting fighter with good kicks and flying knees. Unfortunately he will not appear in this year's Elimination round because he injured his foot and is out for the rest of 2003. He's never been KO'd in Muay Thai competition.

Ernesto Hoost "Mr. Perfect"

Country: Holland
Club: Vos Gym/Kickboxing
Date of Birth: July 11, 1965
Height: 195 cm
Weight: 104 kg
Comments: Hoost is a four time K-1 GP Champion and the K-2 Champion...they don't call him Mr. Perfect for nothing. Hoost is a great strategic and intelligent fighter, making him the ideal threat in K-1's tournament format. Recently defeated Cyril Abidi by decision after being kicked in the groin twice.

96 Grand Prix Champion
Country: Switzerland
Club: Seido Kaikan/Karate
Date of Birth: September 7, 1964
Height: 180 cm
Weight: 98 kg
Comments: Hug was the perennial Kyokushin fighter in K-1, a very exciting guy to watch and a great sportsman. He won the GP in 1996. The Japanese fans loved him and adopted him as their own. Unfortunately Andy passed away from Leukemia in 2000.

Mark Hunt "Super Samoan"
01 Grand Prix Champion
Country: New Zealand
Club: Liverpool Kickboxing/Kickboxing
Date of Birth: March 23, 1974
Height: 178 cm
Weight: 114 kg
Comments: Mark Hunt won the GP in 2001 and shocked the world. This guy came up from fighting on the streets straight to the K-1 ring and did it with more class and success than Tank Abbott, needless to say. A great chin combined with heart and immensely powerful punches. There are rumors that his knees are injured and he will not be fighting for the rest of 2003. He has yet to be KO'd.

Country: France
Club: Boerboel & Tosa Gym/Kickboxing
Date of Birth: December 26, 1972
Height: 190 cm
Weight: 120 kg
Comments: LeBanner is huge and mean. One of the more aggressive fighters and always looking for a KO, he sometimes lacks in defense. More KOs in the 1st round than anybody else in K-1. Returned from the injured list to win his fight at the Paris GP by KO.

Michael McDonald "The Black Sniper"
Country: Canada
Club: Freelance/Kickboxing
Date of Birth: February 6, 1965
Height: 180 cm
Weight: 96 kg
Comments: McDonald is a solid fighter but like Leko is built to be a light-heavyweight. He used to train with Hug but feels he was left in Hug's shadow and never received the attention he deserved. Made it to the finals of the Las Vegas GP 2003 with two impressive KO wins, but lost a decision in a war against Bonjansky.

Country: Japan
Club: Seido Kaikan/Karate
Date of Birth: October 17, 1972
Height: 185 cm
Weight: 98 kg
Comments: Ahh, Musashi. He's got good, fast low kicks but he's too small to trade with the bigger guys of K-1. He looks good when fighting lower ranked opponents but gets overmatched anytime he makes it to the GP Finals.
K-1 Profile

Jan "The Giant" Nortje
Country: South Africa
Club: Steve's Gym/Boxing
Date of Birth: April 11, 1975
Height: 211 cm
Weight: 143 kg
Comments: Jan "The Giant" Nortje is a big guy and has some raw power but lacks quite a bit in technique and defense. He has the height and reach advantage of Schilt but doesn't have the finesse to capitalize using these.

Rick "The Jet" Roufus
Country: United States
Club: ?/Kickboxing
Date of Birth: June 3, 1966
Height: 180 cm

Bob Sapp "The Beast"
Country: United States
Club: Maurice Smith's Kickboxing
Date of Birth: September 22, 1972
Height: 190 cm
Weight: 159 kg
Comments: Sapp has exploded onto the K-1 seen with strength, power, and...well, force? Bringing little to the table other than tremedous size, Sapp had bulldozed his competiton until his loss at the hands of Filipovic this year. Sapp is a PHENOM in Japan.

Masaaki Satake
Country: Japan
Club: Seido Kaikan/Karate
Date of Birth: August 17, 1965
Height: 185 cm
Weight: 106 kg
Comments: Satake was able to get to the finals of the GP in 1994, and that's the best he's ever done. In his prime he was pretty good, and his "invisible kick" has become a running joke here on Sherdog. Satake fought in PRIDE numerous times but was generally unsuccesful. He recently retired after Inoki Bom Ba Ye 2002.

Date of Birth: October 27, 1973
Height: 208 cm
Weight: 116 kg
Comments: Semmy has fought in K-1 on a few occasions and done well. His height and reach are huge advantages and it seems as though his body was built for K-1 competition. He has a background in Karate. Semmy was supposed to fight in the 2002 GP but was injured and replaced by Hoost.

He has competed in some MMA events as well. Recently won the K-1 GP in Basel but was later stripped after testing positive for steroids.

~PART 4: MISCELLANEOUS~
==================

Q: Have there ever been any MMA vs. K-1 events?

The PRIDE: Shockwave event held on August 28, 2002 pitted MMA fighters against K-1 fighters in a series of matches featuring rules from each organization in certain fights. Inoki Bom Ba Ye is another annual show held by Antonio Inoki on New Year's Eve, in which K-1 fighters face off against MMA fighters. Usually these events result mainly in mismatches.

Q: Have any K-1 fighters fought in MMA?

Yes. Maurice Smith, Mirko Filipovic, Cyril Abidi, Jarrel Venetiaan, Jerome LeBanner, Jan Nortje, Bob Sapp, Branko Cikatic, Mike Bernardo, and Sam Greco have all fought in MMA to some extent.

Q: Have any MMA fighters fought in K-1?

Igor Vovchanchin, Gary Goodridge, Don Frye, Semmy Schilt, Gilbert Yvel, Quinton Jackson, Frank Shamrock, Shannon Ritch, Gerard Gordeau, and Genki Sudo have all fought under K-1 rules with differing degrees of success.

Q: Did Silva fight Filipovic under K-1 rules?

No. Silva and Filipovic faced off at PRIDE 20 under a set of hybrid rules which favoured neither the MMA fighter nor the K-1 fighter. The fight was five three minute rounds, with limited ground fighting allowed. The result was inconclusive and went to an automatic draw after five rounds.

Q: Have any pro boxers fought in K-1?

Not to my knowledge, no. However some K-1 fighters do have boxing records, including Jerome LeBanner, Mirko Filipovic, Mike Bernardo, and Josh Dempsey.

Q: Have any TKD fighters ever entered K-1?

A few TKD fighters have fought in K-1, with less than spectacular results. Pierre Guenette fought Andy Hug in 1997 and was KO'd. Pat Smith also had some TKD background, but never demonstrated much of it.

Q: Have any Savate fighters competed in K-1?

Yep. Ernesto Hoost has some background in Savate, in fact he was a European Champion. Hoost uses a lot of Muay Thai in his style though, and he no longer fights in a Savate style. Jerome Turcan is another Savate fighter who made it to the finals of K-2, but lost to Kaman. A French Savate champion named Rob Zanqifo
also fought in that tournament.

Q: What's the knockout rate in K-1?

ESPN reported in 2002 that the KO rate in K-1 was 80 percent.

Q: What is a "Brazilian Kick"?

The Brazilian kick is used by the Brazilian Kyokushin fighters such as Fransisco Filho and Glaube Feitosa. It's a deceptive, whippin kick in which the fighter bends their knee and kicks in a high arc halfway through the motion.

Q: How did Andy Hug die?

Sadly Andy became suddenly and badly afflicted by leukemia, which led to his death on August 24, 2000.

Q: Why does Aerts' gear say "666"?

At some point when Aerts had an upcoming fight with Bernardo, who is very religious, he decided to put "666" on his attire as a rib towards Bernardo.

Q: Where is Fransisco Filho these days?

For all intents and purposes, Filho seems to have retired from K-1 in order to focus on Kyokushin Championships.

Q: What happened in the ending of LeBanner vs. Pettas?

Pettas got knocked down by LeBanner, and got up again quickly, but he was quite dazed. Apparently out of confusion Pettas approached LeBanner with a punch even though the ref had already stopped the fight, but he hesitated to throw the punch. LeBanner then knocked him out cold.

Q: What happened to Sam Greco?

Greco is retired from K-1 after struggling with injuries for the last few years. Word is that he has been training for MMA but he is still plagued with injuries. His debut in PRIDE is still greatly anticipated by many fans.

Q: Who is Mirko Tigar?

Mirko Filipovic. For some reason he used a different name in his first few K-1 matches, in 1996.

Q: What does Cro-Cop mean?

It stands for "Croatian Cop". Filipovic is a member of the Croatian special forces, in an anti-terrorist unit.

Q: Mark Hunt won in 2001? Where the hell did he come from?

Mark Hunt's story is one of the most compelling tales in K-1 history. Apparently a bouncer saw him KO somebody in a street fight, and was impressed - to the degree that he suggested Hunt try out K-1. The rest is history.

Q: What race is Mark Hunt?

He's Samoan.

Q: How about Ray Sefo?

Sefo is Samoan/German.
