There's pretty much about a hotel or guesthouse every 10 feet on Koh Samui - you can just show up and find one most likely.

+1. When you arrive, you will find accommodation for heaps cheaper than booking on line anyway.

But depending on which season you're going, it wouldnt hurt to have a reservation somewhere as a backup, and then you can always change when you get there. There are a lot of places where you can reserve without paying. You can also check lastminute.com

check out Tapee Bungalow on lamai beach. pretty decent place and the owners are really cool. only a few minutes away from the camp by scooter which you can rent for really cheap per day. bungalows at tapee are really affordable too, 800 baht for an airconditioned double bed or 400 baht/day for a fan and two single beds. have fun but watch out for the ladyboys

Good suggestion but he may not need the Air con depending on how long he is staying. I'd say if you are staying for a month or longer , don't opt for the air con cos you will want to get used to the himidity. Air con also costs heaps more than fans rooms anywhere in Thailand cos of the electricity they use.
