This has to be one of the best body kicks in MMA

Their r guys in the heavy's that say this is not a good or powerfull kick. And even say the punch is more damaging by Machida. IMO this is one of the best body kicks i have ever seen in MMA. Shoguns technique and timing is devastating.
I actually give Machida credit for taking it so well it could of easily broken his ribs and ended the fight, and the judges say kicks cant end fights.

You can see the shockwave from that kick go all the way up to machida's hair haha. No doubt a brutal kick.

Machida commited and moved into the kick therefore it packed an extra punch...however shogun lifted off the ground with his plant foot which normally zaps power...we had already made contact though so maybe some power was zapped from this but not all.

Maybe both things considered it would be equivalent to Shogun landing any of the other body kicks he did with his foot planted for the follow through, but without Machida moveing into it.

I train standup and this is the way I see it. Maybe someone else with actual fight experience or someone with more experience then me can elaborate though.

Shogun through the soul of all of Curitiba into that kick. However, as Snowfist noted, Shogun had left the ground, though not much power would've been lost as the kick was more of a jump roundhouse anyway (as opposed to if he were to unintentially slip off the ground). But it's obvious that the kick is blunted by Machida being too close (linearly as well as rotationally/'counter-clockwise'); and though Shogun threw a whole bunch into the kick, by him connecting with his shin- and with his shin being almost perpendicular to his anterior thigh, I would imagine that this blow didn't land with much force at all.

*Kick a bag and be so close that your shin lands on the bag while it is almost at a 90 degree angle with your knee, and notice regardless how much force you exert that much of it is lost due to the direction of the 'kick' being incongruous (by almost 90 degrees) with the direction faced by the contact point (the shin). It'd be like throwing a conventional standing knee to a 100% vertical target. In reality you can only make incidental contact if you touch it at all!

** Now if Shogun would've landed that in that exact scenario with his thigh above the knee then it'd be a completly different observation.

That was a brutal kick. I heard it in the stands. I remember thinking he might have broken his ribs. I seen Shogun practice a jumping round house a lot, where he leaps into the bag while throwing it. He broke down our heavy bag in the gym, which is a specially reinforced one because everyone uses it for kicks. We've had several top UFC fighter train at the gym and Shogun was the only one in 5 years to break our stand. Not the bag, but the metal reinforced stand. Honestly people say a thai kick is like a baseball bat, but I can swing a baseball bat all day on our bags and the stand would probably hold up for a lifetime.

i actually think it more pushed than hit

because the knee and the top of the shin hit, didn't seem like much space for the shin to impact

Can't explain too well

You don't know how to judge the effectiveness of kicks very well then. Shogun was airborne throwing that kick, didn't get a full rotation in his hips while throwing it, it hit almost with the knee, and Lyoto hit him with a straight left while he was coming in.

I'm sure that kick didn't tickle, but it wasn't as hard as it looks, and the fact that you think ribs could have been broken from it suggests to me that you haven't even sparred before.

I believe Rogan was ranting and raving about that kick as well, not noticing (like many people) that it didn't land well and that Lyoto tagged him in the face and then immediately stuffed a take-down.

Great kick, although Crocop vs Magomedov is still the best one.
