I wouldn't say it depends on the fighting styles, take boxing for example, look at Arturo Gatti the come back kid, sure his speech was slurred but he wasn't brain damaged or known to be anyways, but he took some hellish beatings over the years, then look at someone like Ali, didn't really take a lot of punishment but ended up with parkinsons, supposedly because of boxing.
It's the fighter, some fights like Gatti can take A LOT of punishment to the head, and be fine, when some can take very shots and end up brain damaged, it's the way the fighter is born, some have thicker skulls, some can adapt to getting hit hard and not get dazed compared to others.
I train in Kickboxing, and to be honest I've never heard of anyone getting brain damaged or seriously hurt (life threatening). A lot of that could be down to the fact most fights are 3x3 minute rounds so fighters do not sustain a lot of punishment per fight, like boxing for example, Arther Abraham/Jermain Taylor from last week.
Along with the fact it depends on the fighter as I pointed out above.
