Brain damage

Hi everyone. I saw some posts talking about brain damage in kickboxing and muay-thai and I started wondering if top fighters take so much damage to the head that their brain get damaged. Do you guys know any stories of top athletes getting serious brain damage? To be honest the first thing that pops in my head when talking about brain damae is Ruslan Karaev he's like 24 right and he already had like 6 or so soul crushing knockouts, that's gotta leave some impact on your brain...

Here is a video documentary about the man entitled 'Warrior'. It's in polish but you can probably still appreciate the slurred speech, etc..:

If you're talking about K-1/MT in particular, Satake is an egregious case. He's been suffering from brain damage since at least '95, and was told to hide it by the K-1 management so that they would have a Japanese fighter in the front lines.

^^^^ really, I wanna hear more stories. What are the chances in kickboxing / K1 to get brain damage ? A lot of it depends on fighting style I'm sure. What about Goodridge does he have brain damage from all those wars ? Guys MOAR info please

Funny thing is he only got KOed like twice in his career. Buakaw had like 400 fights but doesn't seem to have brain damage. It's probably about the fighting styles, more hits to the head = more brain damage, same goes for how hard the hits are.

I wouldn't say it depends on the fighting styles, take boxing for example, look at Arturo Gatti the come back kid, sure his speech was slurred but he wasn't brain damaged or known to be anyways, but he took some hellish beatings over the years, then look at someone like Ali, didn't really take a lot of punishment but ended up with parkinsons, supposedly because of boxing.

It's the fighter, some fights like Gatti can take A LOT of punishment to the head, and be fine, when some can take very shots and end up brain damaged, it's the way the fighter is born, some have thicker skulls, some can adapt to getting hit hard and not get dazed compared to others.

I train in Kickboxing, and to be honest I've never heard of anyone getting brain damaged or seriously hurt (life threatening). A lot of that could be down to the fact most fights are 3x3 minute rounds so fighters do not sustain a lot of punishment per fight, like boxing for example, Arther Abraham/Jermain Taylor from last week.
Along with the fact it depends on the fighter as I pointed out above.
