Andy Souwer interview (03 DEC 2005)
This short Fightmag interview was conducted late last year at a fight event in Ypres, Belgium. Not exactly hot off the press but since it hasn't been posted here yet, I thought some of you might be interested:
note: my english translation may seem a bit sloppy but I thought I'd sacrifice quality to try to stick as closely as possible to the french wording
How are you?<O:P
Andy Souwer : I'm fine, thanks and I would even say (smiles) that at the moment, everything is looking good for me.
Is 2005 'the year of Souwer'?<O:P
Andy Souwer : Yes, you can say that because this year, I have had some big wins for my career.
After your victory at the World Max, do you believe to be the best fighter on the circuit?<O:P
Andy Souwer : Honestly, even though I am the 2005 champion, I think that there are some fighters on the « circuit » which could prove to be very difficult and one must recognise that (overall) there are some excellent fighters.
Are you thinking about a rematch against Buakaw* (*PorPramuk in the original text ..tsk tsk..)?<O:P
Andy Souwer : Yes, it's possible in the future.
And a fight with Albert Kraus?<O:P
Andy Souwer : Although it isn't my only objective, let's say that if the opportunity were to present itself, why not?
..Or Ramon Dekkers?<O:P</O:P
Andy Souwer : I don't think this is possible given the current state of things but if that were to happen, it would be really great for me.
Could we see you in M.M.A?<O:P</O:P
Andy Souwer : M.M.A. is really something for later because right now, I am very focused on K1 and the S.boxing Cup. I am very dedicated to these and it leaves me no time at all for M.M.A. One thing at a time and we will see later.
Is the K-1 circuit better than the Super League?<O:P
Andy Souwer : Don't expect me to tell you that one is better than the other, K1 is more recognised internationally while the Super League is better-known in Europe.
Will we ever see you fight in the Super League?<O:P</O:P
Andy Souwer : Unfortunately, for the moment, as I've said before, I am spending a great amount of time getting ready for K1.
What are the challenges that await you in 2006?<O:P</O:P
Andy Souwer: I will take steps to win all my fights and to take the K1 belt in 2006. I am working very hard for this and I also hope to win the S. boxing Cup.
<O:P
Are there any french fighters you would like to fight?<O:P</O:P
Andy Souwer : I am a man who likes challenges but among the french fighters, two men immediately come to mind: Danny Bill and Farid Villaume - these are two big names in France. I know that Danny was seriously injured in a fight in 2003 and I salute him because he is a great champion.
What can we wish for you in 2006?<O:P</O:P
Andy Souwer : First of all, on the personal level, that all goes well for my family, those close to me and most of all for my little boy. Then, as far as sports go, that I may garner some nice wins.<O:P</O:P
Can you say a few words to the readers of Fightmag?<O:P</O:P
Andy Souwer : I hope that the public still enjoys watching me fight, for me, as for all fighters « fans » and supporters are important. Thanks for their support and it is my wish that they continue to support me for a long time. (...)
Interview conducted by Jean Paul Sawasdee.
