Jacket wrestling has also been done since before Christ. One of the earliest was Kurash http://www.kurash-ika.org/english/history

Still judo added throws like tomoenage which had rarely if ever been seen before outside Japan. The soviets then later added throws into judo (like the Khabarelli) that had rarely if ever been seen before.

I dont doubt they might have been tried before - but there a difference between trying and drilling to perfection. Its quite possible that a throw that is difficult no-gi will be overlooked by wrestlers but done well nogi by a judokawho had perfected it with the gi where it was easier. the Iranians have started bringing moves nto judo that were more commonly seen in wrestling. People have long been aware of them but presumably felt they didn't work in judo and it took top wrestlers to transition to judo to show that they could work. taking down a top level compettior in either sport is hard and to a work a new technique so that it will work take sa lot of commitment and good coaching but people who understand the technique.

From my limited experience of watching Olympic wrestling - most of the judo type throws seem to come form places like Georgia http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?im...GL:en%26sa%3DN, Chechnya, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan which have jacket wrestling traditions.

Your may generally be right that if a throw could work well against an Olympic wrestler without a gi people probably would be using it in th Olympics. however, I also think your going somewhat of the point of what works in MMA. Even if Learning judo throws is not the best way to take down Olympic wrestlers in mMA (and the different rules mean its possible they are) it still may be the best way to take down Sprawl and Brawl converted strikers who have trained to stop wrestlers.

One of the differences between MMA and wrestling- in wrestling the other guy is your equal on the ground so positioning off the take down is everything- in MMA you may have the superior ground game so that any takedown will do so long as it gets you on the ground.

Practically speaking, it is hard for the average guy to get the sort of everyday, intensive, fundamental wrestling training beyond high school.

Ideally, I'd want to be on the high school wrestling team and build a great athletic base and sense of how to control another person. I had only one year of high school wrestling and was mediocre at best. But even that little experience has been a big help in my jiu jitsu--more than 20 years later!

In part that may be because wrestling also helps you develop a taste for being on top. Iif there's one thing that many fighters with jiu jitsu as their primary discipline develop, it's a preference for fighting from the bottom. As good as a person can be from the bottom, I prefer the percentages from on top.
