He keeps going on about Chinese because it is a difficult language to learn, and because, let's be honest, it is the only vaguely impressive thing he has ever done in his entire life.

Yeah, that's what I tried to say in my first post in this abortion of a thread.
Learning a language is nothing different than getting a 2 year degree from a community college.
Seriously, it's no different.
It's like going to a community college and getting an associate's degree in....Nursing....
All that is required for you to do is attend the classes.
Since he has obtained so many college degrees, he should understand that...
Speaking of which, let's clear that up shall we?
Lubaolong, please list your college degrees as you received them. So, please tell us the colleges you went to, the degrees obtained, and the length of the program if you wouldn't mind...
And also please tell us if the degrees were obtained on-line okay?

If they did, they wouldn't be in the military. If you really do have a friend in the military, ask him if he passed the pqe and is professionalized in the language. No? Well, what is his DLPT score? He's not even anywhere close to even being allowed to take the pqe? Then ask him isn't NSA's language standard a 3/3? Because I guarantee he is no where even close. There are entire squadrons of linguists that aren't even 2/2, and I only knew 2 other linguists in Hawaii that were at a 3 level. 3/3 is the required score to get your foot in the door anywhere. Yeah, ask your friend about that. The major percent of military linguists are next to worthless.

It is? How do you figure? One of your grunt friends told you, right? It's pretty simple. All you would have to do to confirm what I said would be to look up the base pay and local COLA, BAS, BAH, etc plus the bonuses and language pay. I'm sure you're smart enough to find all of these things on the interweb.

I'm afraid not. First of all, to even get in Chinese you need a certain ASAB and DLAB score that puts you in the top ~6% of people that take it. After that, there's a good chance of you failing out. There was about a 35-40% attrition rate in my class. You're looking at the top 2% just being able to graduate with a 2/2. If you want to look at how many military translators have a 3/3 on the DLPT now, I bet you could count them on two hands. I'm not even joking either. Ask your buddy, if you really have one. These military linguists aren't getting of the military and doing shit.
