as much as i would've liked to see a definitive ending, Maeda's eye was completely shut, they had to stop the fight. Props to Torres and Maeda, that was a fucking war

Not this time. Maeda's eye was completely swollen shut, not just bloody or bruised, his eye was sealed closed, probably has a broken orbital.
Letting him continue would have been reckless and irresponsible by the doctors and ref.

I do think that sometimes he is excited or winded from body shots. He has a huge drive to win - and when he sees an opening he puts everything he has into it.
