WTF is the difference between a TKO and a KO??

how in the world can the ufc or the athletic commission call jorge rivera's win over kendall grove a TKO? grove was crumpled against the fence, out cold... and they call it a tko?

i don't get it, i always thought a tko was like werdum's win over gonzaga, where you won because the fighter was technically knocked out of the fight, due to not defending or whatever...

please someone explain how rivera's brutal KO of grove can be called a TKO?

and i've seen this same thing with other fights, where a guy gets KO'd and they call it a TKO, or the other way around where they call a clear tko, where the guy is not out, a KO

sometimes they seem to call TKO's KO's and vice versa

but i dont think Kendal was completely out. If he was then it was a KO...

Was Kendal completely out or was he still conscious? I thought he was still conscious but couldn't defend himself.

I don't think there's any real clear-cut definition other than (and this is shoddy at best) a KO will generally refer to a knock out on the feet. You can knock someone out on the ground (Shogun/Arona or Evans/Lambert) but usually any stoppage on the ground will go down as a TKO.

*Shrugs*

I don't know what else to tell you.

There difference is a KO is called when a fighter is unconscious and a TKO is called when a fighter is still conscious, but no longer intelligently defending themselves.

There have been a few TKOs that should have been ruled KOs(such as Jardine vs Alexander) and some KOs that should have been ruled TKOs(such as Shogun vs Rampage), but whatever...no big deal.

Yeah sometimes it does seem a bit arbitrary at times, but on the other hand the end result is the same so it's not that big a deal.

I read a KO is just that, the fighter is knocked unconscious, and the fight is over. I also read that if the ref intervenes and halts the fight, even if the fighter has been KO'd, the fight is then ruled a TKO.

But who knows what's accurate when it comes to the UFC.

Usually a TKO is given after a quick flurry of strikes, whereas a KO is given after a single devastating strike.

In boxing it's much more clear cut but yes in MMA it can be debated since there is no ten count.
