Does anybody have a logical reason why they've started doing this?

If you look at the time frames, they are not that different, but not all that long ago they had about 4 events per year - last year with pay-per-views and tv cards, they held 18 events that is 3 every two months.
Compare that to 5 PPVs in 2005
In 2006 they held 5 PPVs, and 5 SpikeTV cards.
5 PPV per year give or take has been the norm for the UFC since almost the very begining.
The advertising has ramped up because they are selling more venues, in more places and still want to get some awareness 2 to 3 months out from an event.
Look at
Wikipedia's list of UFC events you can see that they have a lot more events in a shorter amount of time.
