Well, he was pretty good in both at the same time and they are so similar....I don't think you can really deny one.
Throw in that every judoka here can relate quite well I'm sure, to his grappling style.
In all fairness, he evidently promotes his sambo moreso now though.
Judo has really seemed to just come into the mma scene over the recent years.

Who are "the many" MMA fighters who have been talking shit about judo? I know Diego said some things before the Karo fight, but I haven't heard much else.

Hughes said he is not 'convinced' of judo yet, Rampage said 'his wrestling greater than Yoons judo', Laimon saying that 'judo head throw shit don't work'.....just talk, no real hating.

So then if he reps Sambo moreso..it means he is a SAMBO practitioner and his base is....SAMBO

Not 1st but he promotes his sambo yes. I posted a response after that regarding this and was more fair.
GG, when you gonna get you some judo? Your only 17, young enough.

Not necessarily. He says sambo and I call bullshit. Well not really, but he would have to deny he is doing judo out there and I cannot see that.
If you ask me when I watch Fedor, 'Is he using a judo base'? I feel I would be lying if I said no. Same with Sambo, go figure. Maybe if he did more (a) leglocks I would lean.

Judo incorperated into MMA training is a different story, but that doesnt make judo anymore, its a hybrid then! Many traditonal martial artist cross train and then go to MMA and say "see my taekwondo is working" and i tell them "no man the armbar escape you just used wasnt takwondo" , or just like the kyokoshin guys in K1 challenege the Muay thai guys and you see them using muay thai moves themselves and then saying "kyokoshin is stronger" i tell them "no man you just did a muay thai number on that guy" !
MMA is using everything and all elements that are effctive and it is also ADAPTING individual styles to fit MMA combat.
Karo is an MMA fighter, he KO's people sometimes and that is not by using Judo. He wouldnt last 30 seconds in a fight using judo alone.

The difference between sambo and judo is pretty fuzzy at best, especially in Russia. Most of the top people compete in both (even Japanese judo champs have competed and won in the world sambo championships). You won't find a single Russian champ in either judo or sambo who hasn't done both extensively, they're pretty much synomonous.
As for Fedor, he started both simultaneously (in Russia they're taught together). He was a member of the Russian national judo team (the 2nd best team in the world for heavyweights, and had a chance to go to the olympics (which he decided against because he correctly decided he'd make more doing MMA).
Anyone who's ever been at the level to go to the olympics in any sport, especially for an international power at that sport, will assure you they've put a lot of effort into that sport. No one gets on a national team without a great base in the sport they're in. Saying Fedor was on the Russian national judo team without a good base in judo is as silly as saying Dan Gable was on the American national wrestling team without a good base in freestyle wrestling because he did folkstyle rather than freestyle as a kid.
However, his primary focus is now sambo (in which he still competes) rather than judo. Though again, sambo's throws and takedowns are from judo, as are its armlocks (it doesn't have chokes, his chokes are completely based on judo), so this is almost semantics. Talk to Russians about this, they'll think the question is silly. Samboa and judo in Russia is like folkstyle and freestyle wrestling in the US.
