If Machida were more marketable, he'd be pushed harder, but right now the UFC short term LHW picture is pretty much set, as you say.

Extrapolating the permutations even further should produce this feast of fantastic fisticuffs:

Forrest Vs. Rashad - Winner is Champ
Rampage Vs. Wandy - Winner is No.1 contender
Machida, providing he gets past Thiago, to be either No.2 contender, or, in my eyes, they will get the champ to defend twice before Machida gets a shot.
E.g. Machida would have to beat Thiago, and then another top contender, like a Chuck or the loser of the title or top contender bouts.

I do agree. And if one day Machida has a title shot, nobody will dare to say he didn't earn it !
Chuck however, is not likely IMO, since he will probably be booked to some super fights (ala Anderson Silva) much more than fighting for the title (I think they will use his drawing power to the end, and be careful not to decrease it by so other losses).
