This could be completly pulled out of my ass but I couldn't stop thinking about it.
Slams are one of my favorite techniques in MMA. When I think of crazy slams I think of the Randleplex, Arona's death, Hughes powerbombing Newton, even that idiot Sapp lifting Nog into the air.
My query is about the give in mats. The more I thought about it, the more I couldn't help but think about how Pride rings seemed to have more give to them than the mats in the octagon. The overall sound of the Pride ring resembled the sound of a wrestling ring, not to compare mma to wrestling, but bear with me. The octagon always kind of had a more solid sound when people were hitting it. Not much sound came from the canvas, giving the impression of less give.
Thinking more about it, i thought about how quickly Fedor and Nog recovered from seemingly devistating slams. Not to say that Fedor isn't a cyborg and Nog isn't a nasty motherfucker, just wanted to see if anyone had any info on this or had ever thought about this subject.

I'm sure there are people who have actual experience in an octagon here, I've always wondered how hard (or soft) the mats actually were. Same with a ring, how much give do they have?
The slams you referenced that were KO's were so brutal, they must do huge damage no matter what the surface is.
I would love some insight...I lean toward the thought that Pride mats have more give to them than that of the octagon, simply because Hughes' powerbomb seemed to have less impact than that of Sapp tombstoning nog or Randleman flipping Fedor. This could all be pulled from my ass which is why I wold love to have some insight

Slams are cool to watch and all, but they require a rediculous amount of energy that usually doesn't pay off in the end.
That aside - I'd love to see more people slam when they are getting guillotine-choked. Here's how I see it --- a guy slips the choke on you while you're both standing. Fuck. Ok, You can stick your arm between his legs and bring the other arm around his waist. Clapse the two together, lift up with your back, tilt the fool to the left and SLAM!
It's a good technique that I've seen Page use often...more guys should try it.'
EDIT - Here is a video that shows slamming pretty well. Watch the opening 30 seconds and you'll see Rampage use the exact technique I described.
