What if Matt Serra Defeats GSP in the Rematch? [Long Read; Overview in Red

There... I said it, what if it happens? I don't even know what to think of the possibility because there certainly is a possibility that he can win... he dominated him the first time and forced him to tap due to strikes... I will probably pick GSP, I know I'll root for him... how many people will actually root for Serra over GSP? It's hard to do so... I mean if it were Hughes vs. Serra, I'd be all Serra, but GSP is such a likeable, athletic, determined warrior who is perhaps one of the most likeable guys in MMA (unless you have a Confederate flag bumper sticker and/or the phrase "French-Canadian" makes your stomach turn).

I like Serra, I think he's much more likeable than Hughes... the only thing worse than an egomaniac is a fundamentally Christian egomaniac with an ego so powerful that it literally oozes out of his autobiography. There is no denying Matt Hughes' success as a fighter, especially in the UFC's welterweight division but he has now passed the torch to GSP in my eyes and is slipping ever closer to becoming the Rich Franklin to Anderson Silva and the Chuck Liddell to Rampage, if you get my drift.

Serra seems to be a helluva coach... his team dominated Hughes until he had to give up some of his own teammates because he was doing too good and he did TKO/Tap due to Strikes Serra when he was like a 9-to-1 underdog... you have to like the guy, he's got that New Yorker vibe... the loveable A-hole and I mean that with no offense intended... he's like a De Niro if you just get past the politics of being an MMA fan... he's a genuinely funny guy... that impression of Hughes was perfect!

Whenever the rematch takes place... I will be rooting for GSP but if Serra wins... I say good for him! He's had a rocky career and instead of giving him credit for his greatest achievement everyone is quick to say it was a fluke or that GSP "got caught" (one of the new UFC propaganda phrases like Chuck Liddell "slipping" when Wanderlei obviously rocked him.).

What are your thoughts on the rematch and more importantly the idea of Serra winning... let's all assume Serra wins (somehow), how do you think he would win? I know I'm going to hear a lot of "LOL. GSP by whatever he wants." but I've come to expect that from every other one of you fuckheads, but I love this place anyways.

PS: On a more random note, did anyone catch the last Inside MMA? I have never seen an interview with Fedor where he spoke full english... it was nice to see... he said before the Randy fight (next year) he would like to take Couture to a fine resturant and have a long talk with him, he seemed very friendly and respectful of Couture and was very admirable of HMC striking abilities, classy guy!

He won't beat GSP ever again. Don't count on it. Just as Hughes is 1-2 with him. Besides Serra is annoying and has no place amongst the world's best.

As to be expected... from Cincinnati no less! Anything can happen... count on anything, that's all I can say. Every time you say it's not possible, the intangibles begin to align in Serra's favor... I'm telling you.

I think it would be bad for the sport in general. You would end up seeing a lot of threads criticizing GSP too. And a lot of fans leaving him.

But its not going to happen.

I highly doubt Serra could beat GSP again in the same way but he surely does have a very small chance.

Well... in that case, I hope Serra wins and I hope the GSP fans are exposed for the spineless cowards and fanboys they really are. I take so much shit for supporting Cro Cop, Shogun and mother-fucking Nogueira (FROM ONE SINGLE KICK!)... I know what it's like to be in the trenches... your favorite guy gets broken in half by Gabe Gonzaga... what do all the UFC fanboys do (generally that's who they are)... they laugh... they photoshop his ass into some parody like its a huge joke but when their guy loses... they jump ship! Same with people who bash the Pride fans... I loved Pride, granted I've moved on but Pride will always have an important significance in the way I view MMA... more-so than any other organization aside from the UFC as it is all there is left... (Sorry I went off subject but fans who ditch their favorite fighters are a loss or even losses... they're not true fans.)

I'd bet the house that GSP takes him down. There's a higher chance that Serra will T/KO him than sub him.

If GSP trys to trade blows with serra he will get knocked out again. He must take Serra down

styles make fights

it may be be coming a cliche but it is true dammit, just look at the ranking mess that is chuck-wand-rampage

gsp is a dominant force, due to his speed power size skill etc
he is not the mos natural fighter in any category (standup, jj, wrestling,) there are fighters who are better than him at every aspect of the game but he is really good and just too powerful for most to deal with, he will be a force for many years.

styles make fights

matt serra is a tough fight for anybody,

his height was ironically a problem for gsp before, not being used to fighting short guy like matt, matt got inside and did too much damage

serra has much more advanced jj and hits as hard as most at ww

he is VERY hard to finish, went to close decision with bj ffs

an in shape matt serra could very well have gsp's number

only time will tell, but how much would all you nuthuggers hate that right?
hahaha

Here is another thing... I think people are vastly overrating GSP's wrestling. I know it's good, no it's better than good it's above average but he's not an "elite" wrestler.

He's very well rounded and in my opinion GSP's elite quality is his physical condition, his genetics and his ****bolism. Guys like Fedor don't have that but they get the job done.

I definately agree GSP is a better wrestler than we all expected but maybe A.) Koscheck was overated and B.) Hughes is admittedly towards the end of his career.

GSP is a force to be reckoned with but his strikes are just as good, if not better than his wrestling... especialy with the way he is inconsistent and has a lot of variety in his strikes... he's what Cung Le wishes he was + ground game.
