Weight classes under 170 lbs

We've seen alot of discussion with likes like Gomi and Sakurai having to choose between 155 and 170 lately and to me the number of guys stuck between the two(possible add BJ Penn and Aoki) is proof the unifed system needs changing. The 10 lbs gap between weightclasses should IMHO come in under 170 not under 155 giving us...

265
205
185
170
160
150
140
130

The only reason places like shooto were able to get away with the gap between LW and WW was IMHO the relative lack of guys using extreme weight cutting.

Ideally, we should have more weight classes, but the talent pool may still be a bit shallow to be able to create all these weight classes without almost completely depleting others.

We'll get them as the sport grows and as the above poster said, the talent pool gets deeper.

Yeah, and they likely just keep the same 15lb difference between classes, and add 140lbs as soon as the sport begins to grow some more. Maybe cut the HW limit down a bit, and add a SHW division as well:

Super Heavyweight - Over 255lbs
Heavyweight - 205-255lbs
Light Heavyweight - 185-205lbs
Middleweight - 170-185lbs
Welterweight - 155-170lbs
Lighweight - 140-155lbs
Featherweight - Under 140lbs

Then it will be just like boxing with 63 diferent weightclasses.. And skip the 265 limit.. Heavyweight 205, 185, 170 and 155 is enough.

Agreed that you run the risk of watering down the talent and giving everyone a belt with too many classes.

But 155 is not light enough to be the lightest weight class. A 155 pounder would be a Middleweight in boxing and one of the middle weights in wrestling. Even the average in-shape American (the 10% that are) walks around at around 175 pound--enough to cut down to 155. The average South American, East African or Asian? They probably walk around at 140 in shape, without cutting weight. So if you want that sport to grow and have competitors from all over the world (like boxing or wrestling) you can't put 50% of the world at a disadvantage by forcing them to fight outside of their natural weight class.
