Weight classes. Another thing we should NOT learn from boxing.

I read an article explaining how the 10 point MUST system does not work in MMA and it was something we should not learn from boxing.

Well Weight classes are something else we should not learn from boxing,

When Mayweather fought Hoya there was a title on the line. Can any of you remember which one??

NO!!!

Theres so many titles that no one knows or cares whos champion. Fighters move up and down in weight forefeiting titles along the way and eradicating all of their value. They do this because they're chasing the big money fights.

Dan Henderson said in an interview:

"I'm probably going to stay at 205 since this is where the big money fights are right now"

More weight classes and thus more titles will only lead to an increase in this behaviour.

Mabye a class like 140 or something to take advantage of guys between 120-145 pounds but nothing beyond that please.

In short:

Less weight classes=Less titles=More value to being a champion

and

Less weight classes=More fighters per class=More great matches that can be created.

Lets make this sport about being a champion like our other great sports (NFL,MLB etc) And not about just money.

True dat.

Too many weight classes reduces the significance of their belts by a large margin.

Jesus, speak for yourself. Just because you and the rest of the dumb MMA fans are too retarded to be able to follow too much at once doesn't mean boxing has too many weight classes.

Mayweather and De La Hoya fought for the 154 pound belt BTW.....I really don't think that's too hard to remember, but I guess I overestimate the intelligence of MMA fans yet again.

More weight classes is just a simple function of the sport getting bigger. Eventually if enough fighters come about as the sport gets popular you won't be able to just simply ignore all the fighters under 155. In Japan for example they have reasonably competitive classes fighting under the 147 mark.

If MMA is ever to truly become worldwide then this is what will have to happen, more weight classes to accomodate a larger talent pool of fighters that can go all the way down to even 100 lbs. Sure right now it isn't an issue because you won't find fighters that light in the US, but what happens when MMA gets big in say Thailand?

More weight classes is OK. 8 champs for each weight class is ridiculous. That is why I am glad the UFC bought PRIDE.

the thread starters spot on...... theres so many world champs in boxing that the actual term "wolrld champion" is no where near as respected as it used to be
