The UFC's downfall: early stoppages

so, the last few UFC shows have been plauged with early stoppages. despite Bushido on FSN's crappy productions, i learned something very important. (although i've known this a while, it just seems that it came at an interesting time). one of the Bushido fights, i forget which one, was a really long contest in which the one guy was beating the hell out of the japanese fighter the whole fight. the japanese guy was getting huge shots, and even fell down 3 times!!! but, he never was "out of the fight". the knock downs didn't KO him. the japanese guy ended up armbarring the guy who was putting a pounding on him. it was a good fight!

in the UFC, some dickhead ref would have jumped in at the first "sign" of a knock down. almost every single one of these recent early stoppages in the UFC end with the loser jumping right up and looking at the ref like; "dude, i wasn't KO'd, i just go knocked down".

the UFC refs don't seem to know the difference between a fighter getting knocked down and being able to continue, and a guy getting actually KO'd. and what, they let a fight that has more blood in it than anything i've ever seen go on, which just "looks" more brutal, than a guy getting pouned, who is still 100% aware of his surroundings and capable of fighting!

bottom line, the UFC needs to get better refs, who can actually tell what the hell is happening in a fight!!!

I think with the growing popularity of the sport, and more media attention they are getting. They are trying to make the fights look less brutal. Just my opinion....

i get what your saying, but should they be doing that? making fights "look less brutal" implies that they are appeasing people's perceptions without actually educating people about the sport! and what legitimacey is left if they are being told to cut fights short to "spare" the pussies out there??? fuck that!

And all they got nowadays is rematches in main events.

The only one I can think of in the last 3 events was Tito-Shamrock II, and even that was debateable whether or not it was too early.

I can however think of lots of recent examples of guys given ample time to recover/do something

Franklin - Loiseau
Liddell - Babalu II (Babalu was so out of it by the end that he tried to attack BJM)
A. Silva - Leben
Tito - Forrest
Liddell - Horn II
Stevenson - Edwards

In fact there's been times where BJM lets a fight go almost too long if anything.

Hey, I totally agree with you, but you know how the machine works. With senators and religious right fanatical groups keeping the sport under a microscope. I think this is the way it maybe for a little while. Once the sport becomes widely accepted I think things will return to normal. Right now they are dealing with the perception on Senator Mccain calling this " Human Cockfighting".

It's all politics. John McCain and the boxing establishment would end MMA in the USA if someone got seriously hurt. Thousands of boxers can wind up in comas but if Ken Shamrock leaves the octagon on a stretcher McCain, Bill O'Reilly, and anyone else looking to make a quick buck or some political hay have a media blitz already planned.

Did you see Silva vs. Leben or Chuck vs. Babalu?

Basically, this is another "Herb Dean stops fights too fast" or "Big John lets them go on too long" thread. In an interesting observation, when Bubba the Love Sponge had a crap load of fighters on his show on Sirius on Saturday, he asked them all about the Tito/Ken stoppage and every single fighter said they agreed with the stoppage. If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.

And as for letting Japanese fighters take a beating, that's been a knock against PRIDE for forever now, but that's a whole different thread.
