One they didn't know he was bleeding to death, two they went to get in the fight/rucus that ensued afterwords. In hockey tradition, you always go for revenge and if the players on the ice don't someone on the bench will next shift...
I believe Clint lived though he lost a lot of blood and had a rediculously large amount of stiches. Zednick is still playing. Hockey has more fan deaths and more fights in the fans, heck in the olden days players were known to go into the stands and inform someone that their comments were not apprechiated. One dumb heckler fell into the opposition penalty box and they pummelled him.
Rugby is still tougher. I know plenty of people that wanted nothing to do with lying on the ground while a dozen other people fought over top of you. Rugby has that all body hurt, football is a collision sport, rugby the play can go on for 15 or more minutes, no downs, the idea is to keep possion of the ball, not go out of bounds like a pussy. Hockey also has more stops and starts than rugby.
In Canada where they play a little hockey, the national fitness testing world record for cardio endurance was held by a rugby player, he'd measured higher than anyone they'd ever tested before.
In rugby it isn't uncommon to play more than one game in a day. You're only allowed 5 subs so you play a full game, that is 90 minutes.
When I hear about baseball injuries I just laugh. The Canadian National Rugby team or perhaps the under 25s were on tour in the South Pacific. After a game one player had the usual cuts and bruises, except his got infected by flesh eating bacteria. There were no specialists anywhere near the pitch. He lost a leg and a rediculous amount of his skin. He survived and the only reason he did according to doctors was how tough and in shape he was.
They made a movie about this one. Plane crashes into the side of a mountain. People die, survivors are freezing, starving, and considered dead. A few survive by eating the dead, they were rugby players.
This one was bit older, a rugby player during a game in France. Had his testicles ripped off. In rugby you can't play if you're bleeding. So the common technique when I played was just to put electricians tape over it. I know we taped on a guys ear during the BC High School Championships. So this guy was the captain of his national team. They taped him up and he finished the game. Supposedly camera crews captured his testie hanging down out of his shorts sands skin.
Did I mention they fixed him up and he finished the game.
Wayne Shelford was his name.
Hockey players have played with broken bones too, but the lack of pads, the size of the players, and the length of the games, plus the fact I'd totally bet on a rugby team taking a hockey team in a fight. There are no primadonnas in rugby. Even the scorers are expected to dive face first onto the ball in order to secure possession from large angry men.
Some Rugby Highlights...

Notice how in every hit, the player hangs on to the ball...
This one has more violent hits, but seems even grainier:
