Tito is correct. While sports like the NFL, Rugby and Australian Rules are tough, hockey still comes out on top. Here's why:
- The game is played at a much faster pace
- They do what they do on a sheet of ice. Imagine that, what a novel idea that was someone had 100 years ago, to strap on skates and play on a sheet of ice.
- Most big hits you never see coming
- Players hit each other with sticks. You get whacked on the wrists/forearms where you have no padding.
- You can either get hit with a shoulder, elbow, stick or fist.
- Slapshots fly at around 90-110mph. That rubber puck is solid and really hurts.
- When you get hit in the corner you get crushed against hard boards that barely give.
- The toughguys or "enforcers", the ones who protect the more skilled guys are some of the baddest people on the planet. Usually have rough upbringings and luckily have hockey to use an outlet for the pent up frustrations. Probably the worst SOB ever was Bob Probert. Even his teammates were scared of him. The funny thing was this guy could routinely score 20+ goals a year in his prime. Other bad asses: John Kordic, Chris Nilan, Terry O'Reilly, Chris Simon, Stu Grimson, Dave Semenko (protected Gretzky before Marty McSorley came along) and Dave Schultz (baddest of the bad - The Broadstreet Bullies teams of the 70's that used intimidation to win 2 cups).
- Hockey players are known for playing with various injuries throughout the playoffs such as broken arms, wrists, leg and ribs.
- Try boxing on skates. To fight on a sheet of ice and maintain balance and power in the punches is truly amazing.
- They do this about 3 times a week as opposed to once.
