Title IX Stikes Again, ASU Wrestling Bites It

Title IX has struck again, this time at Arizona State, where Men's Wrestling, Swimming and Tennis have been taken away. This is particularly frustrating because of the past/current success of ASU wrestlers in MMA. If you are unfamiliar with Title IX, read below.

"Title IX was the first comprehensive federal law to prohibit sex discrimination against students and employees of educational institutions. Title IX benefits both males and females, and is at the heart of efforts to create gender equitable schools. The law requires educational institutions to maintain policies, practices and programs that do not discriminate against anyone based on sex. Under this law, males and females are expected to receive fair and equal treatment in all arenas of public schooling: recruitment, admissions, educational programs and activities, course offerings and access, counseling, financial aid, employment assistance, facilities and housing, health and insurance benefits, marital and parental status, scholarships, sexual harassment, and athletics."

I have always supported Women's athletics and their movement toward equality, but Title IX has put undue stress on many successful men's sports programs around the country and ASU is the latest victim. I have personally been affected twice by Title IX. I was recruited to run track at Ball State, who subsequently lost its track program. In addition I played Mens Volleyball (yes that girly sport, but I can hit a ball 80MPH at your head), but because of Title IX, at that time there were 27 Mens DI/DII programs to choose from. Sucks for me, but it sucks for plenty others across the country, please discuss.

Sucks hard.

College wrestling will be gone in 20 years.

I hope college wrestling isn't gone in 20 years.

Its bad for sports. Lots of women think its ridiculous too. Any school with a football team is fucked on men's sports.

As an ASU alum, I'm very disappointed. ASU won't be the last.
