Submissions Dying Off

I started a thread calling BJJ the weakest of the 3 disciplines striking, wrestling and BJJ. I was wrong. It is the most necessary and therefore possibly the strongest.
If you cannot defend BJJ it will be just like the early days of mma.

My point is now that submission defence is required by all fighters and most if not all would train BJJ extensively has the art of being able to submit an appoint began to die as fighters learn to defend themselves..

I picked the following periods in the UFC history; don’t ask why has no legit reason except it seems 50-60 was around half way and 90-100 more recent. I have not studied every card. The results are based on 5 fight main cards (except UFC 99 was 6 fights I believe)

UFC 50 through to 60 had 55 fights with 21 ending via submission.
UFC 90 through to 100 had 56 fights with 6 ending via submission.

How many submissions will we see in the period UFC 200-210?

I guess if you want to survive in the octagon these days, everyone needs a Black belt in BJJ, or at least the know how to avoid getting subbed. It wouldn't surprise me if subs in MMA kinda became the "shorthanded goal" in hockey. Rare, and sweet.

Your evidence suggests they're only dying in the UFC. That isn't surprising since UFC does everything they can to assure the fights don't go to the ground. Dana even goes so far as to always suggest the guys fighting hate the ground and are both going to stand and bang. He sometimes even promises the fight won't go to the ground.

Submissions are strong in Japan and smaller orgs. I saw an omoplata tonight in Strikeforce Challengers. How about that?

It's because th level of jiu jitsu in MMA is MUCH higher than the level of striking. 90% (probably higher) of MMA fighter still haven't figured out how to move their head while throwing punches. Striking defense in MMA is almost non existant.

No, I wouldn't sy that at all. There's not that much money in grappling though, so the top grapplers turn to MMa to make a living. There's far more money in boxing than MMA and there's money in K-1 as well so the top strikers can make a living doing what they do without having to bother learning the ground game.
