Steroids and MMA and the hard truth
Hello all. Long time watcher, first time posting. I wanted to post a topic regarding steriods and their prevalence in MMA. You should at least hear me out because I have taken performance enhancers, played college football and saw the prevalence of the drugs despite stringent NCAA testing, and train at a local MMA gym in Orlando where I know of pro fighters who take performance enhancers.
First, fighters take steriods to get stronger, faster, and train harder. Steroids allow you to recuperate faster and thus train more. Steroids also obviously artificially enhance you. Just like in ALL pro sports, from football to baseball, performance enhancing drugs are widespread in MMA.
Now, just beccause a fighter takes steroids doesn't mean they will look like a bodybuilder, for example Joyce Gracie. Then you have Phil Baroni and others who look like they take steroids and have gotten caught. Fighters, for the most part, don't take steroids to look like bodybuilders, but rather take them to train harder and longer and get stronger which all translates in the cage.
Look at Brock Lesnar. I totally believe he took steroids at one point in his life, probably after college and in his WWE days. Now, just because he has never been "caught" doesn't mean he has taken them. Juicing is widespread in pro-wrestling. If you know when a test is coming, like fighters do in the UFC, you can simply cycle your steroids. For example, if a figher was taking Anavar, which is an oral steroid that is not for bulking but rather for increasing strength, explosiveness and lean muscle, you would just stop taking it 40 days before your test. You could take anavar for 2 months, 70mg a day, and then stop 40 days before your fight and completely pass the test, yet you would still retain the benefits from the cycle. Further, you could be taking HGH up until the day of the fight and not come up hot on a test at all unless the organization is specificall testing for HGH because HGH tests are very expensive and still very young. HGH pretty much gives you all the benefits of steroids.
Why is it so hard to imagine steroids or HGH being widespread in MMA? Stop nuthugging and be realistic. Everyone wants an edge and many are willing to cheat to get there, especially if fighters suspect many other fighters of juicing themselves. The tired old line of, "He has been tested and never been caught", is, for all purposes, pointless. Unless there is YEAR AROUND TESTING, fighters can juice all the time and just cycle off properly. It is not hard to do, especially when you know when you are getting tested. I have seen it done with NCAA testing and also because athletes on the team had athletic staff feed them info on when tests where coming up. It's almost too simple to the point of being laughable.
I say test fighters year around, randomly, with no heads up, and see what happens. Those fighters and gyms that don't want year around random testing have something to hide. I doubt the UFC wants year around testing, not because of the legal issues or cost, but because they would be afraid of what would happen. My opinion is that the UFC is most likely aware of the dirt going on and having year around testing would upset "operations". Anyone who opposes year around testing has something to hide. If you are clean, you have nothing to worry about, right?
I regret taking Anavar. I went from 5'10 and 190pds to 200pds solid with 8% bf. It got me stronger, faster and far more explosive within 2 months. I had not water rentention. Also, my base strength is now far more higher than it was before the cycle. It was great. As a marker, before Anavar, I would bench 225 for 16 reps and that would be average. After Anavar, I do 225 for 24-27 reps on average and nothing else was changed in my diet or training. Basically, I am forever changed physically. But I cheated and can never take it back.
So, with year around testing, MMA can get cleaned up and end all speculation about fighters. The UFC should push for this because, like I said, any fighter with half a brain can juice and cycle off before their fight, retain their gains and still pass the test. Steroids and HGH are VERY easy to get and I would bet that many of the top fighters, even title holders, have taken or are currently taking performance enhancers. Why? Because others are doing it. Why? Because they can and can get away with it.
Flame away!
