Starting Over: The Brandon Vera Story
Now that Vera has fired his manager, you have to think this guy is scratching his head, thinking, "What the fuck did I do all that for?"
Vera was leaving the UFC over money, when he had one fight left on his deal. He was going to take the money from XC in a one fight deal for cash he'd never get in the UFC. That didn't work. Had he renegotiated with the UFC he would have fought Tim Sylvia instead of Frank Mir. Instead, the UFC needed someone to fight Tim and went out and got Randy...(I know, I Know, no one is making you read this).
So now Randy is title holder, and at the same time the UFC went out and bought Pride, and a lot of their HWs! Then Gonzaga beats CC, who now gets to fight Randy, and Vera will have to fight Nog, and if he were to win, he may have to fight Sylvia for the right to fight for the belt at all. So instead of just sucking it up, and fighting Tim for the title, he has to fight guys better than Tim just to get back to #1 contender status. Or, he can drop down to 205.
Nice work, Guy.

Still, in my eyes and the eyes of many, Vera is still a top HW or LHW contender - he didn't lose. He may have to fight an extra fight or two, but he's got to be still in the top mix. In other words, besides UFC and XC execs, there's not too many casual fans who know of the inside scoop and thus I don't think his breaking ranks with the UFC (as short as it was), will tarnish him all that much.

Yeah that pretty much sums it up from what we can see. I'm not so quick to throw em to the wolves though. IMO he was just trying to look out for his best interests. Who am I to decide what those are for him. However I gotta from teh outside looking in. . . if it was me, I woulda gone with the UFC.

'He has to fight guys better than Tim'.
God forbid a fighter need fight the best to be the best. Fighters like a challenge man.

Vera screwed up. He got greedy too early. I'm all for a fighter getting as much as possible, but you need to work your way up to the big bucks. I'm sure the UFC was offering him a pretty good deal, but he thought is was worth more.
IMHO the whole Elite XC offering him big bucks is a bunch of BS. If it were true he'd still be signing with them. Instead what I believe is that Vera (unless it was just an internet rumor?) made the entire thing up figuring that if the UFC didn't bite he'd still have Pride as a backup plan. The joke was on him.

Sorry but I remeber Vera posting that the Elite XC was something his manger did behind his back and that he NEVER wanted to leave the UFC. Thus why he was fired.
And anyway, if you are going to be the best you have to fight the best so it really doesnt matter.

Vera screwed up, but if I were him, I'd immediately drop to LHW where, out of sheer necessity, he could get a title shot by the end of 08. Seriously, after Rampage/Chuck who else at 205 looks title-worthy? Rashad and Machida are promising, but shouldn't be rushed. Vera drops to 205 and he's almost automatically next in line for the belt.

I'm sure a couple of wins will be all it takes to get him back on track. I don't think he's got to start over at square one.
