Well that list was fun and interesting, but silly. Many sports that are important in US and important for marketing the sports industry are not that tough. Rodeo? Women's Hockey? Golf? Baseball? Basketball? Please for real toughenss it would be all the superpainful endurance sports, combat sports, football, and a maybe for effect a few that demand great mental focus and poise. You would probably have to throw some Olympic sports in there too. A real list just would not hit all the marketing and other points needed by the magazine/tv industry to sell tickets, beer, cars, etc.

Fun, but Bogus! says more about the market segments Sports illustrated in trying to hit than about real toughness.

It's a very American list I know it's an american magazine but if you call it the toughest athletes in the world you could at least look at the global prospective. I think Fedor must be the only non american/non based in america/doesn't compete in america regularly athlete on the list. I mean for instance Pavlik? We have a whole host of boxers over hear much tougher than him; Calazaghe and Hatton are just the tip of the iceberg in british talent, wait till you see more of Haye and I think Lockett could beat him - his prob only just in our top 10.

That list was more like, "The most successful athletes."

SI doesn't understand what being tough is about, I guess. Especially so far as boxing goes.

Pavlik and Mayweather as two of the toughest boxers is just drivel. Almost disgusting.

Lance Mackey is pretty cool... he deserves to be on the list.
