For Dana its big news. He can say he pioneered MMA in NY. For the casual fans it means very little. In fact casual fans probably didnt even know MMA wasnt allowed in NY. Like someone mentioned earlier, it's for MMA, not just the UFC. EliteXC, Affliction, etc can now all host shows in NYC.

My sources tell me that the big announcement is that they are turning TUF into a tournament style program with a mix of existing talent and newcomers. The winner of the "tournament" gets a shot at the belt. The format change coincides with the 5 year contract UFC has with Spike. The TUF series format itself will change and instead of placing the individuals in the house -- it will be more like an all-access show leading up to the various fights.

There is an inside source in the web-site realgm.com (60th biggest forum on the net) and it's under the "UFC/MMA" thread on the Off-topic Canada board. The poster is an inside source, a moderator on the forum and has been posting for around 6 years.

The announcement has been post-poned until next week now because there was a vote a few nights ago and it was the majority against this "big decision" It should go through once they get to the tables again, then it will be announced.

They had SUPPOSEDLY passed the bill to regulate fighting in New York and it was going to be announced today. But now, it's come out that the deal isn't actually finalized as the votes weren't in agreement...so the announcement will now be made next Tuesday.

Also... a day after reading "MMP"s post I came across this:

I guess it’s pretty big news, but kind of disappointed really.

The problem with this is that the UFC announcement has been pushed until TUESDAY. The Tourism and Sports Development committee isn't slated to vote on this until WEDNESDAY.

The thing that makes me think it's an HBO deal is the length....5 years give or take, sounds more like a contract deal rather than sanctioning...Do they put timelines on sanctioning?

not too sure about the HBO thing, The next step should be a permenant UFC events centre in Las vegas with a regular shows, to tap in on all the tourists, think Hard Rock cafe hotel / arena/ shop and casino!
