i think either:

A. SPEED: bounced it and tried to punch under it before it dropped below his arm, or

B. ACCURACY: just threw a punch at it without landing enough to knock the ball away.

Its for both , For speed your hands have to move faster then your eyes .
Then the tennis ball is small , making it harder to hit. Hence Its a coordination drill & its for reflex.
