Shin Vs. Foot

I noticed Mirko tries to kick everyone in the head with his foot. Rizzo likes to kick everyone with his shin. I imagine the shin bone is harder than the top of the foot but by kicking someone with the top of their foot like Mirko they get maximum impact because most of the momentum would be behind the foot an not the shin. What do you guys think? Anyone know of a link which discusses this?

I dont think Mirko tries to use his foot, hes not that tall, and most of his opponents are taller, or same height, i think its just because his legs arent that long, so the other guys get the short of the stick, so to speak

Getting hit with the shin would be more devastating for sure. Your shin is just this big chunk of flesh and bone, whereas your foot is kinda small and not as heavy.

I think its more due to Rizzo's willingness to engage. Rizzo himself knows he's got a very good chin and even though they are both counter fighters, I think Rizzo is less woried about getting hit.

I'd have to agree with that reasoning. Anyone who has seen Mirko's fights knows that Mirko prefers to fight from the outside. Throughout a fight you will see Mirko pushoff of an opponent so that he has some distance between them.

Hitting with the shin is always going to do more damage just because your tibia (shin bone) is dense, long, and "sharp." The extra power generated by the 8 inches or so longer moment arm (physics talk) is countered by the fact that the tendons in the foot and the slight seperation of the bones in the foot absorb more of the power. Long story short, both can knock you out, but the shin is more likely to do so

That's the difference between a Muay Thai fighter and a kickboxer.

Mirko tries to land with the shin. It doesn't always work out that way, but he is trying to land with the shin. Watch his most recent fight with Wand to see the devastating effect of Mirko landing a clean shot with his shin.

wow...some of the more bizarre reasoning ive ever read. I don't think ive ever seen a less engaging, or less aggressive fighter than Rizzo in my life. I've seen almost all of his MMA fights, and other than his first several in the UFC, he has seem far more timid than not.
