Serra is to small to submit anyone at 170

Serra is supposed to be this BJJ god, because he runs a BJJ school and was a BJJ champion back in like 99 or whatever in a couple of different tournaments and he may be but all his fights in the last 5 or so years have gone to a decision whether he won or lost.

I really think he is too small to compete in today's UFC at 170 with his strengths being submissions. He's 5'6" and he's going to try and sub today's 170 pounder's like GSP who's 5'10" or Matt Hughes at 5'9" or Diego, and it's not so much how tall they are i'm just talking about their general frame size and how much they cut to hit 170 whereas Serra probably walks around at 170. I just don't see how he can really compete strength wise and expect to win.

If he had a whole different game plan like maybe he is an excellent striker or an all star wrestler who can GNP his way to victory he might have a chance in that division, but he's not going to be big and strong enough to take down today's 170 lb fighters and sub them without spending a whole lot more energy than his opponents are spending and most of them could probably power out of whatever he's got anyway.

Just my 2 cents. Serra doesn't belong in 170, he needs to go back to 155.

He says that making 155 is too hard on him, seems to be a guy caught inbetween divisions.

I've heard talk before that he'd be ideal at 160lbs

That's what I thought too, and I think that may be because of his age more than anything? Maybe he just doesn't want to put his body through that strain to cut 15/20 lbs.

Agree with the threadstarter on everything. Given the right positioning, and a lot of time spent on the floor, he could sub just about any 170 lb fighter, but the big problem is taking the fight to the floor for Serra. If people remember Serra's interview before his fight with Lytle, he was saying he likes Italian food too much to want to stay at 155. To me that means he is pretty much flushing any real chance he has of being a top fighter. Sherk is the same height as Serra, more muscular, and he makes 155

Even with the weight thing aside I just don't think he is good enough to beat most of today's WW's or LW's. He hasn't exactly been the most dominant fighter in the world even back in the day. Majority of his fights have went to decsion and not very impressive ones either. I think if he gets steam rolled by GSP we wont be seeing much more of him.

Really I think more than anything I just feel bad for Diego Sanchez. I think GSP should really be fighting Diego, and Hughes waiting on the rematch for the winner of that. Now GSP is gonna beat Serra and then they are going to have Hughes vs GSP rubber match, and Diego is still waiting for his title shot, so after Koscheck he may still fight again before the title shot and god forbid how far that will set him back if somehow Kos wins. And all this because Serra shouldn't be fighting at 170 lol
