Question about eye injuries

I tried to put this in the ask the fighter's forum but I guess I'm not allowed to create threads there. I don't know where else to put this but I would really like an answer.

About a year ago I had my right orbital bone fractured in a fight, and the eye doctor told me that there was an increased chance of my retina detaching because of the trauma my eye had suffered. Just yesterday I got hit in the same eye (playing basketball this time, though) and had the bottom part of my field of vision give out. I went back to the doctor today and he said there was a little spot where it looked like my retina might be beginning to separate.

This scared the shit out of me for two reasons. One, a detached retina means I'm blind in my right eye. Two, even if I can get surgery to correct it, the doctor couldn't seem to stress enough that my days of fighting were over.

My question is...in a sport with so many nasty eye injuries, how do fighter's cope with this? Just keep plugging along and hope that they never go blind? Do I just have a pussy retina? What's the deal?

Retinal detachment is scary, but luckily there is a way to fix that. There are other macula injuries that can happen with trauma that can't be cured. I'd say take care of yourself and there's other options other than fighting. KNOWLEDGE IS POWER.

I sometimes wonder how fighters can get hit so much and not get any symptons of a detachment, so I can't help you with that.
