PRIDE Tournament and Title Fight History

Please let me know if there are any mistakes and as with the other UFC history (UFC Complete Tournament and Title Holder History (help)) please do not "Quote" this post. It makes the thread too big and it's annoying. Comments to improve this history are welcomed.

Bushido (Way of the Warrior) is a format wherein two rounds are fought, the first being 10 minutes and the second being 5 minutes.
Champions fighting in tournaments do not have the title on the line during the tournaments.

2000 Grand Prix Finals- Mark Coleman defeats Igor Vovchanchyn in a 16 Man Tournament (The first round having been fought just over 2 months earlier). In the semi final round, Kazuyuki Fujita threw in the towel at the beginning of the bout against Coleman. Fujita had fought 15 minutes with Mark Kerr and was unable to continue in the tournament. Mark Coleman’s quarter final bout against Shoji also lasted 15 minutes. The final match between Coleman and Vovchanchyn had Coleman having fought one 15 minute fight prior and Vovchanchyn having fought two fights (Goodridge-10:14, and Sakuraba 15:00) for just over 25 minutes. Coleman won the fight at the 3:09 mark via submission due to strikes.

The fight, which took place at Rings- King of Kings 2000 was a tournament bout in which TK hit Fedor with a illegal blow (accidental) which opened a cut that would not allow Fedor to move on in the tournament. Many have argued that the fight should have been ruled a “No Contest”. At the present time, it is believed by the author of this history that Rings had to declare TK the winner in order for the tournament to continue. Any additional info is appreciated.

Pride final Conflict 04 is a bit messed up, I though Fedor was accidentally cut?

I thought the Fedor/TK fight didn't go the distance...as I remember TK couldn't come out to the 2nd round

not accurate. both fights were non-title.

it also appears you are missing the Crocop vs. Nog interim title information.

Would have been hilarious if Fujita had been able to capitalize on that near KO and not get the belt

wikipedia is incorrect on both of those...

here is reporting from the time of Pride 26: http://www.mmafighting.com/news/pride26.html

and an even better one from respected MMA writer Ivan Trembow:

and I have no clue who would put that Enson tidbit in there. That is just crazy. but here is proof:

The MINOTAUR: PRIDE BOUND!
Submitted by: Marcello Tetel
Posted On 02/22/2002

Over this past weekend, Rodrigo 'Minotauro' Nogueira the PRIDE Heavyweigt Champion left Brazil for his upcoming battle in the PRIDE 19 against Enson Inoue. After several weeks of intensive training, the FULL CONTACT FIGHTER magazine's FIGHTER of the YEAR left with victory in mind.

Many remember the rumors involving 'Minotauro' participating in the New Year's Inoki Bom Ba Ye. An injury to his knee sustained in the fight against Heath Hearing in Pride 17 kept him out. Upon leaving, Minotauro commented his knee now had sufficient time to heal, and he feels he's ready to take on Enson. 'I had to turn down the offer to fight in the K1 X Inoki Team event since I had a problem in my knee but my doctors are very good and I feel like I have a brand new knee! For those who have had a chance to see my training sessions know that I'm ready!!!' The knee was also tender back in Abu Dhabi 2000, when he lost to Rico Rodriguez via knee bar. Afterwards, Minotauro said 'I had no strength in my knee to defend'.

About his opponent Minotauro said 'Enson is a tough guy, who gave a hard time to everybody he fought, because he has the soul of warrior. I'm looking forward to a war against him. Especially in the beginning of the fight, when he comes at you 200%. But i'm ready and I hope to try to finish the fight with submissions, which is still my favorite plan'.

Minotauro is not defending his Pride Heavyweight belt at this time, and this is due to the schedule. 'It seems the promoters don't want 2 belts defended on the same card and once Vanderlei Silva signed to put his belt on the line against Tamura, I have to wait for a defense, but I wanted a match! For me there's no difference in a title match or a non title match, basically I train in the same way and the pressure is the same for me. I'll probably defend my belt for my next fight.' concludes the Tokyo bound Minotauro.

ADCC Brazil wishes the best of luck to Minotauro next Sunday, February 24th.
