Icon4 The Nogueira brothers and their chins' specific strengths and weaknesses

Has anyone else noticed that it seems like the Nogueira brothers' chins are solid for traditional looping hits or head kicks that whip your head from the side, but not for straight in shots that push their chin down and head back?

Example:

Sokoudjou's KO punch to Lil Nog hit him squarely on the mouth and knocked his head down and back, unlike a hook or uppercut would. (Imagine yourself in front of a mirror trying to give yourself a double chin...that's the direction.)

Tonight Heath Herring's kick hit Big Nog in almost the exact same place with the same type of action, and it rocked Nogueira more than we've ever seen, including the LHK from Mirko he absorbed (from the side of his head...see where I'm going here?)

I believe their particular chemistry just gives them really good resistance to traditional KOs where a hit from the side of the chin or head is a near-guaranteed knockout and instead are weak to straight in strikes on the lower half of the face that push the head down and back.

Thoughts?

Dude rewatch please. It's obvious Nog LEANS into the kick.

Yep, he does, but look at the way the kick lands. It's straight in not unlike the Sokoudjou punch on Lil Nog.

Maybe, maybe not. I think you're reading too much into this. If a guy gets kicked in the head he's going down (unless his name is Mark Hunt). Mirko knocked Nog down as well and may well have finished it if it weren't for the end of the round. Both Nogs have an incredibly good chin, Big Nog having never been finished and Sokoudjou being the only guy to put Lil Nog out for the count. Basically if a strike hits that button it doesn't matter how good your chin is.

I don't know from what I've seen Lil Nog doesn't have a chin like Big Nog.

Taking a kick you don't see coming and leaning into it from a 250 pound MMA fighter would knock out most, I'm really sick of talking about it though and defending Nog. That was a great comeback, I don't know if people can't get over Pride vs. UFC or for whatever reason, but I really enjoyed that fight, Big Nog has one of the biggest hearts in MMA. He should be praised for that performance.

Hideo Tokoro hit Lil Nog with a spinning back fist that knocked him out and I think it the side of his chin, could be wrong.

Only Mark Hunt could withstand the jungle punch from Sok

yeah if anyone would have been left standing after that kick they might not be human or their skull is made of titanium, he leaned right into it which made it 10 times worse

Haha, funny thing is CroCop knocked down Hunt in K1 because Hunt leaned into the kick.
