*New Shawn Tompkins Interview*

Lots of great stuff in this interview.
Link: http://www.ultimefanatic.com/modules....php?itemid=68

Text is below.

UF : You took the reins from Bas Rutten as head coach of the Los Angeles IFL Anacondas team. How did it happen and how does it feel?

ST : Bas was given the opportunity that he came to the USA for to work in the entertainment side of the industry. With this new position, it would have been a conflict of interest for him to coach a Team in the IFL, yet be the face of the IFL. The fact that I had already been in charge of the Team and training them since the first day, plus the great relationship that Bas and I have, he asked me to take the position and I accepted.

UF : What about your relation with Bas Rutten? In a way, you are currently working together. Can we expect sort of partnership between Team Tompkins and Legends?

ST : Bas is my mentor in MMA and in life, he has always been like a father to me. As far as us working together at Legends, I believe that my schedule is much too busy for another gym to be added. We will always work together however, we are actually both headlining the Paradise Retreat Seminar weekend in Simi Valley, California in July.

UF : Won’t this nomination affect your availability to direct and coach at Team Tompkin’s gym in London, Ontario? Who is running the gym while you are traveling to Portland and LA?

ST : Obviously the busier I am, the less time that is available for my home gym in London, Ontario. I do however have some of the greatest instructors in fighters taking care of it. I will be continuing to travel there and make sure the quality is the best as well as be using the gym to find and create new Canadian talent.

UF : It seems that some Team Tompkins athletes also joined Team Quest for their training. Is that right and who are theses guys? Are they also following you to LA Anaconda’s headquarters?

ST : All of my Team is part of the Team Quest gym as long as I am part of the Team Quest gym. Dan Henderson, Matt Lindland and myself all have a great working relationship. In fact, I believe the fighters that we are putting out are second to none in the sport. We have the best of all the worlds. My Team Tompkins fighters have already been traveling back and forth from London to Temecula on a regular basis to prepare for upcoming fights. The Anaconda's headquarters is Team Quest Temecula.

UF : Are you now living permanently in Portland or LA with some of your guys to train or are your traveling all the way down from London to Portland and LA regularly?

ST : I now permanently reside in sunny Temecula, California.

UF : Considering your proximity with Rutten and the fact you now reside in California, are you sometimes also training and/or giving courses at Legends?

ST : I have trained at Legends and done publicity events there with Bas Rutten and the Anaconda's. It is not the gym I choose to work out of however. But it’s a great place with excellent training.

UF : Team Tomkins is known as one of the best gym and team in Canada. Which benefits your pupils can earn from training at Team Quest, I mean benefits they don’t already have at the London’s gym?

ST : Obviously having my Canadian fighters training with us in Team Quest helps complete their ability to become well rounded fighters. The fact that the wrestling calibre out here is so high is one of the reasons I choose to make this move. It truly is a great marriage of our 2 Teams.

UF : You recently helped out Hendo at training to prepare for the Wanderlei Silva fight where he upset the world with a brutal KO win. Henderson has given to you a great deal of credit to his improved stand-up game against Wanderlai Silva. How did it went and does it feel to train Dan, a Pride’s champ?

ST : Dan and I have actually been training for about 1 year now. I worked with him for his fight with Misaki and his fight with Belfort. This moment that we recently had though had to be one of the greatest of my life and opened a lot of opportunities for both of our careers.

UF : You are also currently involved in the June’s Shamrock vs Baroni fight. It was reported you would be Baroni’s trainer. Baroni almost said he considered you as the “Canadian Greg Jackson”. Did he went at London or joined you at Team Quest?

ST : Phil Baroni and I will be working together for his Frank Shamrock fight as well as many in the future. I truly have never been so excited to train someone for a fight as I have been for Phil. We work very well together and I think that I can really bring out a better Phil Baroni that we have ever seen. He has so much talent, that people are gonna be amazed at our success together. I will be preparing with for his fight in Las Vegas.

UF : Your reputation is preceding you. Many well known professional fighters said you are the newest “great deal” for muay thaï training. What other professional fighters are you currently work with?

ST : I am currently working with 30 professional MMA fighters, some being Gray Maynard (TUF 5 lightweight), Mayhem Miller, Soukudjou, Forrest Griffin, Matt Lindland, Jay Hieron, Benji Radach and many many more. It has been a trip.

UF : The young phenomenon, Chris Horodecki, made an incredible impression in the IFL. What are his short and long term objectives regarding his career with the IFL and other major international organizations?

ST : Chris Horodecki is a wanted man right now, every major organization wants him. I do believe however he is very happy with the IFL and they have treated him great. He will definetly have a very interesting upcoming year. He is so talented and only ever gets better!

UF : Krzyzstof Soszynski always had a lot of talent, but we noticed big changes concerning his confidence recently and he improved his skill dramatically in 2006. Which changes did you brought to his training to make such a big difference?

ST : Soszynski is definetly the IFL's most improved fighter. This past year has been amazing for him, lots of big wins and a new confidence. I always believed in Krzysztof and knew that there was a warrior within him. All he needed was a little time to develop. Bas and I really made him our student and that has been an honour.

UF : Mark Hominick lost twice to Hatsu Hioki’s hands, and the last time, it was a cruel loss by majority decision which many fans contested. Even Mark protested to the athletic commission. What did you think about this decision? Did you think Hominick deserved the win?

ST : Hominick vs Hioki 2 I feel was a bad decision, to which Hominick was the more aggressive fighter, made much more damage and technically should have scored higher, had the judges known more about MMA. I believe the fight was fairly close but definetly Hominick deserved the win.

UF : According to you, why Hominick had so much difficulty with Hioki,? We often say that “matchup makes the fight”. Theses guys literally have two opposite fighting style. Do you think it was so difficult for Hominick to win because of fighting style matters?

ST : I think that this fight goes to prove how great a champion Hominick truly has been. Hioki is no joke and has beaten so many great fighters… international fighters. We are the ones who ask to fight him. I believe that he is a great well rounded fighter and everytime these guys would fight would be amazing.

UF : Mark Hominick recently signed with one of the UFC’s newest acquisition, the WEC, but Hominick won his two appearances in the UFC against pretty talented guys, Yves Edwards and Jorge Gurgel. Many thought he would have fulfilled his 3 fight deal with the UFC, but The Fight Network reported a few weeks ago that he forfeited the remainder of his UFC contact to fight at WEC. Why did he forfeit his contract – does this mean he won’t ever be fighting in UFC again? I mean, didn’t he had the choice to fight at WEC without necessary forfeiting his UFC contract?

ST : Since our inception into the UFC, we have known that Hominick's true fighting weight has been 145lbs. The fact that he went in and showed how talented he truly is, is a testiment to Mark Hominick. But it would not be smart for us to continue at that weight with guys like Sherk and many others cutting from much higher weights. The WEC is a great organization for Hominick to continue in and become the new champion of. We were given the choice and this is truly the best choice. The WEC is going to be treated like the UFC of 145lbers anyways.

UF : The Fight Network also reported that Hominick has been outspoken about facing WEC Featherweight Champion, Urijah Faber. But on UFC Junkie’s Website, Mark Hominick said that no names have been finalized as of yet for the June card. Is his opponent now officially confirmed?

ST : I believe Hominick's first opponent in the WEC will be a guy named Ronnie** from the K-1 Hero's show. He is a BJJ Black Belt and will be also competing in this year’s ADCC.

**Shawn Tompkins confirmed (April 26th 2007) that the opponent's complete name is RANI YAHIRA.

UF : Why Hominick chose to drop back at 145 pounds?

ST : Hominick is a 145lbs fighter, it is the best weight for him to fight at.

UF : Stephane Patry told us he received a call from the UFC to have Sam Stout fighting Spencer Fisher, maybe in June or July. Is the date confirmed and the contract signed yet? How are you anticipating this fight?

ST : Stephane Patry is not the manager of any fighter I have ever trained contrary to what he has said on this site. Stout will be facing Fisher however in a rematch in June's UFN. I am excited about this match up and look forward to Stout finishing Fisher. Stout has decided also to move to Temecula fulltime with me. This will make his career.

UF : Stout impressed the entire world by winning at his first UFC appearance against Fisher, who was the favourite. Why accepting a rematch against Spencer?

ST : We accepted the rematch because we were tired of Fisher and his fans crying that Fisher wasn't in shape for the last one. That he took it last minute. It’s a matter of Pride and Punishment.

UF : Nothing is officially confirmed yet, but it seemed you’re in negotiation for Chris Clements to fight Jonathan Goulet in replacement of Steve Vigneault for the vacant World TKO Welterweight belt. Can you comment this information?

ST : I am truly looking forward to Chris Clements fighting Jonathan Goulet. I really like Jonathan and I feel we are friends, but I think that they will make a very exciting fight. It won't happen however in June. The IFL is also June 1st and I have already that obligation.

UF : Yesterday afternoon, you told FCF Radio that you believe Chris Clemens already deserved the title shot at TKO 28 : Inevitable. Clements had a record of 4-1 and some people think he misses experience to justify a title shot. What are you answering to that statement? According to you, why Chris should deserve his title shot?

ST : I believe that Clements is the BEST Welterweight in the TKO, hands down. He will dominate that organization. I thought he should be offered the fight last show, but we graciously accepted what the organization put in front of us.

UF : TKO Major League MMA CEO made a statement concerning the fact you didn’t tell him the truth about Chris Horodecki and Krzyzstof Soszynski’s IFL situation. According to his version, you told him theses guys might be able to respect the remainder of their contract with TKO even if they sign with the IFL. Was it a misunderstanding?

ST : The TKO CEO has made claim at least twice a year that someone is a liar and a cheat and so on and so on.... It is never him always the other guy. His bully tactics will no longer work on me and that has to be frustrating. I have been loyal to that organization for every show since the first. I can't believe that he could ever point the finger at me. I'll let the fans be the true judge. I am much to busy for his games.

UF : During the past years, it appeared that Team Tompkins was pretty close and important to TKO. How did you react to Patry’s quote, which mean in a way that you lied to him? Are you shocked?

ST : Honestly, not really shocked. This happens with him every year, its drama. Not my cup of tea. Just like making a statement to the media and fans that there is a lawsuit, however there is no such thing. It makes no sense to me.

UF : Does Horodecki and Soszynski’s respective contract have clauses concerning their total exclusivity to the IFL and it yes, would they be legally authorized to fulfill their commitment with TKO?

ST : When Krzysztof and Chris IFL season is over they will have a chance to fulfill there contracts with TKO. But the TKO contract is only exclusive in Canada, so it holds no power over them in the USA. They love the Quebec fans and look forward to returning to the TKO. It’s that easy.

UF : As reported by Keith Mills in an interview for ADCC News a few months ago - Soszynski said about his situation with the IFL and TKO : “I don’t know what the deal is as far as what is next or if I am fighting in TKO again or not…”. It seemed he knew it would be difficult, or unsure, for him to fight in TKO again. At that moment, did you know there might be a problem with the IFL for theses fighters to fight again in TKO?

ST : As for Krzysztof's contract and all of our contracts. we always plan to fulfill them. But there is a timing, when to do this and when not too. Just because Patry is having a show on June 1st doesn't mean we all have to stop what we're doing and be at his show. I have nothing to prove with this, check the history of our involvement in his show, many times I would supply him with up to 5 major fighters for each show and he treats me like shit. Krzysztof's response was what it was because he is a fighter and his only concern is training and winning. This is how I train my fighters.

UF : Were you aware about the law suits opposing TKO to the IFL before yesterday’s events regarding the interview Stephane Patry gave us? How did you react?

ST : There is no lawsuit. I am sure that I would know and no one has contacted me otherwise. Just threats, and bully tactics. My reaction is of disconcern, all I worry about is preparing my fighters for their upcoming fights and making them champions.

UF : Will all this story affect your relations with TKO organization? It appears that Mark and Sam might be scheduled for the September show and that TKO is trying to sign Chris for June 1st… What’ll happen with Hominick, Stout and Clements @ TKO?

ST : My relationship with TKO and Stephane Patry I think is obvious. I don't need this type of negativity in my life or the life of my fighters. I do however feel indebted to the Quebec and Canadian fans and will always continue to be part of their MMA community and fight in Montreal. I'm just gonna have to be very careful of my business there. My fighters will still fight in TKO and entertain the fans that got them where they are.

UF : As a manager, what is your position concerning exclusivity contracts?

ST : I think that all contracts have their place. The only problem is there are good promoters and bad promoters.

UF : Considering the UFC’s position about the IFL, could there be an obstacle for Horodecki and Soszynsky to get their chances in other major international organization like UFC and Pride?

ST : The bottom line is that these two fighters are great performers that are really good at what they do. They will compete in the organizations that best suit them and their futures. Everyday is a new day and as far as we are concerned the IFL is a great organization and has done nothing but helped and supported their careers positively.

UF : You didn’t compete since you fight Joel Leblanc and David Loiseau in 2001. People are talking that you are on your way to be back into competition. What motivated you to take this decision after 6 years?

ST : The decision to fight again came from my competitiveness as a coach. I am still young and stay in great shape as well as spar and train with everyone that I train. My MMA career was very misguided and I have grown so much as a person and athlete since 6 years ago. First of all, I knew nothing about grappling and trained myself for those fights as well as had no one looking out for my career. Things are different now, very different.

UF : Did you reach an agreement with a particular organization yet? Is the IFL a possibility and if so, would you stay the head coach of the Anacondas team?

ST : I will always be the head coach of the LA Anaconda's and if the chance for me to fight comes it will be when the season has completed so that I can focus on myself and not forget about my responsibilities to my other fighters and the Team itself.

UF : Regarding your comeback, are you expecting to train with Bas, who is describe by the IFL as your mentor and friend?

ST : When I return, I will have many great fighters assisting me, but of course yes, Bas Rutten will be my main trainer.

UF : Who would you want to fight first or would be a great matchup for you?

ST : Not sure who first, but I would be fighting at 185lbs.

UF : Do you have any plans for you career at the moment? What are your short and long term objectives?

ST : My plans are too continue what I have been doing and become known as one of the greatest MMA coaches of all time.

UF : We sincerely wish you all the best Shawn and good luck for your comeback into competition!

ST : Thank you so much for your continued support, I hope that I have answered everything the fans have been wondering. Be sure to check out my web site at www.teamtompkins.com and please keep supporting the sport in a positive way!

Thanks for the post! I can't wait to see Hominick/Faber. If anyone's going to take Faber's title, it'll be Mark.
