EDIT: I also must comment on how amazing your daughter is to be able to teach herself how to sign. I doubt that I could even accomplish such a feat without an incredible amount of practice and study. proof that spirit transcends disability.

He has real heart. You can really tell when someone has what it takes in a sport where eventually everyone gets beaten. Being able to interact with fans in this way can definately help build strong warrior spirit win or lose.
