it was a standard jab --you see that sort of jabbing from boxers all the time-- but sherk just wasn't ready for it. Sherk went into 'jabshock' after the first round...he was flinching everytime BJ moved his hands just about.
That being said, you don't see a jab like that in MMA very often, it was nice weapon and put sherk in a bad spot. Was he going to waste energy taking BJ down, or was he going to eat that jab all night?
beautiful work from BJ.

What was so different about his jab? It's just a standard jab.
He just used it effectively as hell; his reach was greater than Sherks, so he wore him down with jabs and crosses until that beautiful flying knee to the jaw.

I was actually very worried about the crispness of BJ's strikes, especially in the return. He possesses good power, no doubt, but it is his other skills and natural talents (chin, cut prevention, unnatural td defense) that allow him to utilize repeated powerful but lazy jabs over Sherk, who displayed a good technical show of hands (for MMA).

One of the best uses of the jab i've seen in MMA.

yeah BJ gets away with that jab becuase he can depend on his takedown defense --he keeps that fron leg far out so all you get is the single, so he doesn't have to worry about transitioning to a sprawl, so when he wants it can be jabs all day.
most guys don't have the TD or the rep for TD that BJ has, so it's harder for them to use effectively, as there's no disincentive to simply shooting under it.

The only reason BJ's jab looked nice is because so many MMA fighters are absolutely shitty strikers, in terms of technique.
