Machida is talented. No doubt. I wouldn't rank him #1 contender yet. I know many will disagree, but as far as I'm concerned, the only win that can state a case for #1 contender is the Tito fight. He beat:

Bonnar: good fighter but more like a gate keeper
Franklin: Beat him in 2003
Penn: beating a LW does make you LHW #1 contender
Greco: whatever
White: 6 fights under .500
Hoger: losing record in the UFC
Heath: losing record in the UFC
Nakamura: losing record in the UFC
Sokodju: losing record in the UFC
Ortiz: top 10 LHW at the time

If Machida is as great as so many believe he is, he'll get his time to shine. I figure 2009 will be a career defining year for Machida. Either he'll prove he's as good advertised or prove to be a guy that was overrated.

Did I say anything about talking trash? I praised Machida for his attitude and I also respect him for learning English and speaking it in his interviews. He obviously wants to connect with the public and I appreciate that, but he's going to have engage in his fights. Look at it this way, Page is probably going to get the shot before Lyoto. If Lyoto isn't exciting in his next fight he leaves himself open for someone to jump ahead of him. Contenders make statements

Brock = Exciting fighter, huge draw, capable of beating the Champion and carrying cards.

Reshad Evans vs Machida is going to be the most non violent UFC fight ever. One is a defensive / counter puncher, the other loves to move around a lot.

Machida is the lesser version of Anderson Silva in my books. Same defensive / counter punching style, both are very elusive, but Anderson Silva can go aggressive as well where as Machida can't
