There's more to being a champion than just winning fights. A Champion is a face of the promotion and he's responsible for carrying cards and bringing excitement. Noone worth talking to can deny Machida's skill, it's an interesting and effective style but it's NOT exciting. Not many people want to see a guy avoid conflict and ride out decisions. They want to see guys make statements, finish fights and slug it out, not play it safe and make people sit for the entire duration.

I for one think Lyoto Machida has what it takes to be a champion and a great one. He can engage and fight exciting fights, he has the attitude to be an awesome represenative and face of the promotion, but he's gotta stop playing it safe, get in there, engage and finish opponents. If he rides out another decision against Silva, he's probably gonna have to wait again.
