Is Kos underestimating GSP's wrestling?
I wanted to know what Sherdogger's thought on this topic. There's no doubt that Kos is the best freestyle wrestler in the UFC if not all of mma. He's accomplished and has credentials up the ass.
But I think that he may be taking for granted GSP's wrestling prowess. Trigg, Sherk, and Hughes all thought they could take GSP down and failed pathetically for the most part. I know the prevailing argument is that Kos is a far better wrestler than those guys yadayadayada, but the fact is that GSP has elite wrestling ability specifically in regards to his TD defense and control, freakish strength, and exceptional athleticism. With his display of wrestling in mma thus far in his career, I think a lot of informed mma fans would not refute the argument that GSP, has without the gaudy credentials that some of his counterparts have, some of the best wrestling ability in the biz. not withstanding the fact that GSP was also constantly improving his wrestling game with each fight. Don't forget he's younger than Kos and consequently it can be argued that physically he has a less sloped learning curve/higher growth potential then Kos.
I think Kos, while he should be confident in his wrestling ability, maybe not giving GSP his just do. I think Kos will try to bang with GSP, and if that is not going par or better, he will try to change levels and shoot for that double.
Now, for those of you that train, it is pretty difficult to just shoot a double from the outside without setting it up with strikes. Kos is explosive has shown he can do that against Drew Fickett and Ansar Chalangov, but i doubt he will have the same success shooting in without a set up against an equally explosive GSP. To date I have probably only seen one set up of a shot from Kos, I could be wrong, but if Kos is underestimating GSP's wrestling, he could be in a world of hurt. IMO i think GSP will win.
Thoughts on whether or not Kos is underestimating GSP's wrestling?
