Is K-1 Mixed Martial Arts (mma)?

Yesterday on the WHY ARE CROATIANS SO GOOD AT MMA thread a few guys and me started to discus about K-1 being MMA or not. Here is just a bit of it:

Sorry, what I wanted to say is that Mixed Martial Arts isn’t only Ultimate Fighting/Vale Tudo.
I think the name says it for it self-MIXED MARTIAL ARTS(WHIT A BIG MIXED)

Branko Ciaktic was K-1 champion.
K-1 is MIXED MARTIAL ARTS, or a are you trying to say that karate, kickboxing, muay thai, boxing is all the same?
I never said that Croatians are only good at Ultimate fighting (you know what that means) or Vale tudo(since you probably don’t speak any Latin language it means everything allowed), but in all MMA

by your logic grappling tournaments like adcc would be considered mma because wrestling, bjj, and other various grappling arts aren't the same.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed_martial_arts[/url]

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a combat sport in which a wide variety of fighting techniques are used, including striking and grappling.

When to guys that train different martial arts end up in a fight it is a MIXED MARTIAL art fight.
If it is a judo fighter vs. jiu-jitsu fighter, whit agreed grappling rules it’s a MIXED MARTIAL art fight.
If you have a boxer fighting a kick boxer, whit agreed stand up rules it’s a MIXED MARTIAL art fight.
When you have a jiu-jitsu fighter fighting a kick-boxer, whit agreed rules its ULTIMATE FIGHTING OR ITS SYNONYM VALE TUDO WHICH MEANS EVERYTHING ALLOWED,ALL MOVES AND ALL STYLES, one of the forms of a MIXED MARTIAL art fights.

You clearly think MMA is a synonym to ULTIMATE FIGHT but it isn’t.

WHY IS IT CALLED PRIDE ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP AND NOT PRIDE MMA?
UFC(ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP) AND NOT MMAC (MIXED MARTIAL ARTS CHAMPIONSHIP)?

you're taking the term mma literally. it is well known that mma incorporates both striking and grappling, therefore k1 is not mma, although people in k1 have different types of striking backgrounds.

can we please get a third party perspective on this!

I must say he made me think about it!
What do you say? Is K-1 MMA?I
ts clearly not KICKBOXING since the fighters that participate on the shows are from different martial arts, and the rules are a mix of rules used in the basic martial arts.

If not what is it?
Mixed striking tournament whit mixed rules? MSTWMR?
Please send your opinion!

over done thread. I guess it could be subjective, MMA means mixed and doesn't specify which form of MA however the accepted usage refers to graplling with striking soo..

MMA currently has its own connotation. You can't just break down the words literally, because the phrase Mixed Martial Arts has its own definition. Though there is some grey area, b/c not all events are held under the same rules.

MMA is the sport at which athletes in the UFC, K-1 Heroes, PrideFC, EliteXc, Strikeforce etc. compete. Wiki has a good definition for it: Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a combat sport in which a wide variety of fighting techniques are used, including striking and grappling.

K-1 Heroes is MMA. K-1 Kickboxing is not

K-1 is mixed-*striking*martial -arts

UFC/PRIDE is mixed-martial-arts

MMA does have its own meaning today and u cant just break down the three words and translate them literally....it is widely known as a combat sport between two contestants in which both striking and grappling is used but with limits and rules to ensure the safety of the fighters.

Vale Tudo generally means NHB and NHB means Vale Tudo...both of these are technically a part of "MMA" but not MMA the sport.
